Belgian sensation Senne Lammens has joined Manchester United on a five-year deal, having completed a deadline-day move from Belgian Pro League side Royal Antwerp.
The 23-year-old goalkeeper arrives with a growing reputation as one of European football’s brightest talents, in a deal worth €21 million plus €4m in add-ons.
Lammens flew to Manchester on Monday afternoon to complete his medical following longer-than-anticipated negotiations between the sides, amidst interest from several European clubs.
He becomes the fifth summer addition for Ruben Amorim after the arrivals of Diego Leon, Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko.
Why Manchester United pursued Senne Lammens
Having endured a frustrating start to a crucial campaign, United suffered defeats to Arsenal and Grimsby Town, with both Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana facing their fair share of criticism after several high-profile blunders.
Amorim is a long-term admirer of Lammens and gave the green light for his signature in early July, with the player ticking the majority of the criteria laid out by this new-look Ineos hierarchy.
The youngsters’ performances in Belgium have earned widespread recognition across the continent, with starring metrics in multiple areas.
Furthermore, his desire to test himself in the Premier League is well-known, and his eagerness to join the club is a welcome sight. “The first time I heard [of United’s interest], I thought, ‘Wow,’” Lammens stated in July.
“Immediately, a world [renowned] team that follows you. That is special. Of course, I was also spoken to about it a lot, and when I made a save in training, it was United this, United that [from colleagues]… It’s only positive.
“Especially because it’s the best competition in the world, and my profile, my stature, and way of playing, is similar to English football. You have to physically hold your own there, and that suits me.”
The Belgian has been on United’s radar for over a year after an array of league-leading performances.
Officials viewed the Zottegem native as an option to act as understudy to Onana, while pushing the Cameroon international for a regular starting berth.
However, with the contrasting form of both players throughout 2024-25 and the errors made during the opening stages of the current campaign, there is a credible opportunity for an immediate impact.
When factoring in the underlying metrics, it’s easy to see why the 20-time Champions have pursued the former Antwerp star.
| Senne Lammens vs Belgian Pro League 24-25 | Per 90 minutes | Percentile |
| Save percentage | 81.3% | 98 |
| Penalty kicks saved | 0.14 | 98 |
| Crosses stopped | 1.52 | 98 |
| Saves | 4.34 | 94 |
| Crosses stopped % | 11.2% | 94 |
| Throws attempted | 5.76 | 90 |
| Shots on target against | 5.52 | 86 |
| Goals against | 1.10 | 80 |
His arrival signals renewed ambition amongst the Old Trafford faithful, but it is important to maintain realistic expectations, given his relative inexperience at the highest level.
Still, Amorim has finally got his man, and the prospect of a long-lasting relationship is a fitting way to end a largely positive summer window.
