For Michael Carrick and Manchester United, the summer task is simple: reinforce a severely undermanned midfield while also targeting smart acquisitions in attack and defence.
Say what you will about building a best-in-class engine room, but squad depth is a necessity for a side preparing for a congested schedule during the upcoming campaign.
Deals for Ederson and Mateus Fernandes are attracting the bulk of attention, while outgoings will also bolster a transfer kitty that is set to be truly tested.
Therein lies the fundamental requirement for shrewd purchases, often obtained from the intriguing list of European free agents.
And although some may baulk at the idea, even labelling this pursuit as a lack of ambition, genuine opportunities exist within the big five leagues, namely in Oscar Mingueza.
Sometimes, it pays to think outside the box. In Oscar Mingueza, United could do a lot worse.
At 27, the former La Masia talent has risen from a product of Santa Perpetua de Mogoda to a versatile defender with outstanding attacking intent.
Having departed Barcelona in 2022 for the promise of a key role at Celta Vigo, Mingueza has since accumulated 147 appearances and is held in the highest regard by O Celtina.
He starred in a sixth-place La Liga finish last season and played a crucial role in their run to a Europa League quarter-final, supplying a goal and six assists along the way.
However, with his contract set to expire on June 30, interest has already accumulated across the Premier League, with Arsenal, Aston Villa and Newcastle joining Juventus in registering their intent.
None of this comes as a surprise; we are discussing an extremely good player. But this should not dissuade an ambitious sporting department in Manchester.

Even to the untrained eye, Mingueza’s figures scream a modern defender with the ability to assist across multiple avenues in various settings.
United will encounter challenges across both European and domestic schedules, and having a squad member who is comfortable deputising across the backline is unquestionably advantageous.
Furthermore, the Spanish international is only beginning to approach his peak years, and with an annual salary of around €1.2 million, would not command an astronomical outlay for the Reds.
It’s true: some may argue that the level of physical competition differs between Spain and England, and I would agree. But that does not automatically rule out a successful transition.
Celta’s star ranked in the 70th percentile for aerial duels won across the domestic season, placed in the top five for progressive passes, and ranked in the 64th percentile for expected assists.
At a time when Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox are targeting a progressive transfer window to assemble a squad aligned with Project 150’s goals, I believe the club must act intelligently.
For starters, United cannot bend to the will of every selling club, even though the seller holds the cards. The Reds must agree on sensible fees with amortised payments and an onus on bonus-related add-ons.
Thereafter, a data-driven approach to adding free agents is an assured way to build a talented collective with options to address any issues.
In Mingueza, Carrick would inherit a unique attacking talent with size and strength, capable of challenging Diogo Dalot and Luke Shaw for minutes, while also being competent in central defence.
Call me a dated football romantic, but surely this is an opportunity that screams pragmatic thinking and financially shrewd decision-making.
So, should Manchester United pursue a deal for Oscar Mingueza? Yes, we absolutely believe they should.
