For Manchester United, 2024-25 was nothing short of a catastrophe. The Reds finished a record low of 15th in the Premier League and suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Europa League final.
Failure to secure Champions League football was a gutwrenching setback for the one-time perennial giant, as the club lost out on a lucrative spot in European football’s premier competition.
In turn, their inability to qualify saw the three-time Champions miss out on close to £100m in revenue, adding another bruising blow to Ruben Amorim and his summer transfer plans.
However, less than two weeks after that forgettable evening in Bilbao, United have displayed a newfound decisiveness off the pitch, announcing the signing of the highly sought-after Matheus Cunha.
Additionally, a little over 24 hours after the Mancunian side announced the capture of the talented Brazilian, David Ornstein declared Old Trafford the preferred destination for Brentford star Bryan Mbuemo.
The Pulling Power of Manchester United should not be underestimated
Do not underestimate the allure of being part of a squad that rouses a sleeping giant. Perhaps the executives could do worse than making this line part of their negotiation pitch to incoming signings and how they may play a big part in restoring former glories.
Bruno Fernandes has already committed his best years to Old Trafford and, in another significant boost, has declined a big-money move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal.
The landscape has changed since Brazilian forward Robinho was caught off guard by the revelation that two top-flight clubs were based in Manchester. Undeniably, United have since fallen behind many domestic rivals, not least their noisy neighbours.
However, the prestige and glamour of Manchester United ensure they still endure and compete with the best in the transfer market, despite the criminal mismanagement of the idle Glazer family.
Cunha and Mbuemo had been sought by many top sides in England, including Newcastle, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea, yet both men have prioritised the Red Devils.
United undoubtedly sit at the top table of football, alongside other European royalty such as Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Barcelona. Such teams have a certain aura about them, and although this may dim over time, it never fully evaporates.
Even after their worst Premier League finish in decades, United remain a huge draw, and in Amorim, they have a driven head coach with a fresh project that players can get behind.
The 40-year-old Portuguese is trying to implement a positive shift in M16, working alongside the likes of Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Omar Berrada, Jason Wilcox and Christian Vivell, who are striving to change the fortunes of a club that has found itself in the doldrums for far too long now.
Take Leny Yoro as a prime example, having embraced the prospect of joining an exciting project at Old Trafford just last July.
His mother, Flore Baugnies, highlighted his intentions during an extensive interview with The Athletic in May. “They (United) really had a project for him,” she stated.
“A project to make a team with young players, and he really liked that. He could be part of those who would ‘rebuild’ Manchester United’s history.”
This speaks volumes and perfectly illustrates the direction the 20-time English champions want to go.
With arrivals such as Yoro and Cunha, alongside the impending deal for Mbuemo, few would dare downplay the pull of this iconic footballing institution despite recent failings.
Hopefully, there is more to come as the English giants try to claw their way back to the top one step at a time under the watchful eye of their ambitious Portuguese leader.
