With the closure of the summer transfer window swiftly approaching, Manchester United are actively working on several potential departures, with Victor Lindelof one of many first-team names available.
As we exclusively revealed last week, several Serie A sides are keen to acquire the Swedish international, with Lazio, Fiorentina and Como all considering the defender.
Subsequently, Sky Sports Gianluca Di Marzio reaffirmed the interest of I Biancocelesti in recent days – highlighting their desire to bolster their squad.
We understand the player remains open to a move to Italy but is also committed to maintaining his £120k p/week salary – which is problematic for several sides.
The Old Trafford faithful have enjoyed a positive transfer window, with a sense of assured action delivered by the club’s new best-in-class hierarchy.
But, above all, a necessity for compliance with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules remains a priority for Dan Ashworth, with Lindelof’s £6.2 million annual salary a notable topic of interest.
Working towards a suitable exit
Sources close to the Theatre of Red have advised that the prospect of a loan with an obligation to purchase is being ‘mulled over by the club’.
Furthermore, the Premier League giants could potentially manage a portion of his salary in a short-term scenario to see a deal completed.
But Old Trafford chiefs have installed confidence in their market strategy and are apprehensive about folding when negotiating with continental rivals.
Italian colleagues have suggested that Serie A communicators will ‘walk away from discussions’ and focus on alternative targets if a reasonable compromise is not achieved.
When considering the competition for places in defence, Erik ten Hag has built a formidable defensive arsenal.
With Lisandro Martinez, Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro and Harry Maguire, Lindelof must compete with Jonny Evans – who many feel is a better option than the Vasteras native.
Significant squad depth will win titles, but an excessive number of central defenders is a worrying aspect for hierarchy, and the 30-year-old is deemed surplus to requirements.
Keep an eye on this throughout the perennial circus, that is transfer deadline day.
