Manchester United have discovered their Champions League fate for the 2026-27 season, with standout fixtures against Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid to whet the appetite.
A lot has happened since the Reds last kicked a ball in anger within the confines of elite European competition, and much of it has been forgettable.
Erik ten Hag led the Old Trafford faithful into battle on that occasion, delivering a humbling four points en route to a bottom-place standing in the group stage in 2023.
Defeats against Munich, Galatasaray and Copenhagen told only a portion of that tragic tale, as United routinely squandered winning positions with consummate ease.
But today, Michael Carrick has embraced the ideals he once exhibited as a player, and retains ambitions of recapturing some of the sparkling allure of the 2008 side that dispatched Chelsea in Moscow.
Unlike that tournament, his squad must navigate the new Champions League format for the first time, with a minimum of eight fixtures guaranteed against some household names.
Old Trafford will welcome Bayern, Roma, RB Leipzig, and Sabah, with away trips to Atleti, Sporting, Villarreal, and Como.
Since its inception for the 2024-25 campaign, this new European format ensures that teams will play eight matches in the extended league phase, replacing the familiar three-game group structure of old.
Carrick’s men will compete home and away in equal parts and will progress to the knockout stages if they can secure a place in the top 24 come late January.
Crucially, a top-eight finish would bypass the initial elimination round and solidify a spot in the last 16 outright.
Although few, if any, have given United any hope of upsetting the odds, Bruno Fernandes and co will be eager to leave their mark following a prolonged hiatus.
Say what you will about consistency, but the fulcrum of this group has proven they can stand toe-to-toe with any side on any evening; think Ten Hag’s 4-3 victory against Xavi’s Barcelona.
