Highly-rated Manchester United teenager Willy Kambwala is on the verge of leaving the club.
The 19-year-old is close to agreeing terms to join La Liga outfit Villarreal.
El Submarino Amarillo have capitalised on United’s pursuit of defensive targets to offer the French underage star attractive terms.
The deal will be a permanent transfer, with Erik ten Hag‘s side holding a buy-back clause for the player.
Opting for first-team football
German journalist Christopher Michel confirmed that Kambwala had rejected a contract extension from the 20-time English champions on Wednesday.
Earlier this morning, Fabrizio Romano posted information of an impending deal for a fee in the region of £8.5 Million.
The Kinshasa-born athlete impressed during his double-digit breakthrough season, leading to the suggestion that he would stay and fight for a starting birth.
Considering United’s pursuit of Jarrad Branthwaite and Matthijs de Ligt, the prospect of limited minutes in a reduced role proved critical in his decision.
Ten Hag thinks highly of the defender, valuing his dedication to training and integrity in honouring the badge.
His ability is obvious, but leading the backline at the Theatre of Dreams requires time.
With ten senior appearances to his name, Dan Ashworth and Co feel further experiences are necessary to cultivate his skillset.
Should Kambwala continue to grow into the assignment, the opportunity to exercise a buy-back clause will ensure the club gains the maximum output from the talented youngster.
While it is frustrating to see a popular teenager depart for an alternative setting, we wish him the best and hope his performances merit a return to Manchester.
