Following the pre-season victory over Rangers in Murrayfield, Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag challenged Amad Diallo.
The Ivorian excelled on his return to Scotland, terrorising the right wing and executing a fine finish for the opening goal.
Having made only 21 appearances since arriving from Serie A side Atalanta in 2021, some suspected the winger would inevitably move on.
However, following positive talks with Ten Hag throughout the Summer, Amad has expressed his desire to extend his deal, even suggesting that he would see out his career in the North West.
Laying down the gauntlet
There is a swagger in how he composes himself on the field – sometimes leaving supporters bewildered.
He is cool, calm and capable of the magnificent, and this is something his chief knows all too well.
“We have to see Amad in a different way,” the United boss told MUTV following his side’s 2-0 victory against the Gers.
“Of course, he’s still young, but he’s not inexperienced anymore. Last season, he had bad times with bad injuries, before that he was in the Championship and had a great season.
“At the end of last season, he had a very good time in our first team – played some good games.
“Now, this has to be the year. It’s great that he starts like this.”
A desire for commitment
United are continuing preparations ahead of tomorrow’s pre-season meeting with Real Betis in San Diego.
With the promising cameos of the youngster an undeniable plus throughout the trio of pre-season outings, US supporters are keen for more.
Speaking to the media ahead of the fixture, the 22-year-old clarified his stance on his future.
“I’m very happy here,” he said.
“I think everyone is happy with me because I smile with everyone, and have good energy.
“Why not stay here all my life?”
Having endured a frustrating season riddled with injury and rehabilitation, Amad finished strongly and notched an iconic stoppage-time winner against Liverpool en route to FA Cup glory.
Competition is notable at the club, with the returning Jadon Sancho, Antony and the hugely impressive Alejandro Garnacho fighting for the right-wing spot.
‘I think everyone wants to play, that’s why in training, you need to give everything to fight and start in the XI,’ the attacker added.
‘We have a good team, good players, so the manager makes the final decision on the pitch and the bench.
“You need to be ready.”
Kickoff at the Snapdragon Stadium gets underway at 3:00 AM BST on Thursday, with full coverage available on MUTV.
