Anonymous individuals and mainstream media were quick to lambast, oblivious to many personal matters endured within his family.
But Ten Hag understands the player, and following his commitment to pre-season, the Dutchman anticipates a notable response.
“We’ve seen on the tour he’s very lively, in very good shape already and we expect a lot”, he told media ahead of today’s Community Shield.
“There are so many suggestions around Manchester United, this team.
“We know the truth. He’s working very hard [and he is] very ambitious and motivated to have a very good season.”
An opportunity to shine
The winger supplied eight goals and five assists in 43 outings across all competitions last season – one every 235 minutes played.
In contrast, his 40 attacking outputs in 56 appearances in the previous campaign equated to a contribution every 108 minutes.
One notable feature throughout a troublesome year was the absence of Luke Shaw.
The pair – often a catalyst for an attacking onslaught – have cultivated a formidable relationship.
While it is not an excuse or a reason to pardon lacklustre performances, it certainly offers valuable insight into the lack of penetration on the left wing.
Regardless of the variables surrounding an underwhelming showing, time waits for no man at the highest level of football.
Having signed a new long-term contract last summer, the two-time FA Cup winner committed to the club until 2028.
However, alongside a plethora of youthful talent in Alejandro Garnacho, Amad Diallo and Rasmus Hojlund, he faces the prospect of being overshadowed.
There is no hiding place at the Theatre of Dreams, and any first-team player is only a poor performance away from a media agenda.
Marcus Rashford has provided multiple examples of his elite pedigree – shelling out 83 goals and 40 assists in 272 Premier League appearances.
Often defined as a confidence player and a man who lacks the desire to dig in when times get difficult – now is the time to put those labels to bed.
With Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos revolution beginning against City at Wembley this afternoon, the stage is set for a defining chapter in this remarkable career.
