It’s been a busy month for Sonny Aljofree, with the promising youngster extending his stay at Manchester United before making the short trip to Accrington on a season-long loan.
The 19-year-old has penned a three-year deal in the North West, with Erik ten Hag a keen admirer of his talents and potential for growth.
In addition to his well-earned contract, the defender recently secured a loan move to League Two outfit Accrington Stanley – aiming to build on his stint with Altrincham last season.
He became the eighth academy player to earn a temporary move during the summer, joining Joe Hugill, Radek Vitek, Elyh Harrison, Tom Wooster, James Nolan, Tom Myles and Rhys Bennett in harnessing their abilities in a more physically demanding setting.
Invested in continued development
The future is clearly bright for the Plymouth lad, completing a sure and steady climb through the youth ranks.
Noted for his temperament, he regularly led his teammates throughout his young career and captained the under-21s in their opening Premier League 2 fixtures against Arsenal and Stoke in August.
Sonny has been a beneficiary of United’s innovative loan scheme in which players are eligible to train and play with the U21s while experiencing intermittent outings with non-league sides throughout the campaign.
His time at Altrincham came through this system, which will inevitably contribute to enhancing the football ecosystem in the region.
Although he did not make a senior appearance for the Robins, he gained invaluable experience during his time.
The teenager debuted for United’s under-18 side at 16 in 2021 and played his part in the squad that triumphed in the FA Youth Cup the following year. Additionally, the defender participated in the UEFA Youth League.
His work ethic has shone through since he arrived at the club, with Ten Hag keen to maximise his development at a critical stage of his career.
Regular training births within the first team culminated in 45 minutes against Rosenborg in July during the opening outing of the Red summer tour.
Everybody at the Theatre of Red wishes Sonny the best during his time at the Wham Stadium, and we will be supporting his growth with keen eyes.
