Ahead of Manchester United’s devastating home defeat to Liverpool on Sunday, Chief Executive Omar Berrada and Sporting Director Dan Ashworth spoke regarding the state of affairs at Old Trafford.
Although their comments circulated following the side’s second consecutive loss, individuals have decided to disregard any form of positivity given the timing.
While expected dissatisfaction remains among the ranks of supporters, the unwavering desire by some to generate daily torment for the Dutchman continues to surface.
A public backing with meaning
Despite this noise, it is imperative to consider the facts. The performance against Arne Slot’s side was not good enough – I would not dispute that.
That said, the club is three games into a new season, under a new hierarchy, and still integrating a changing dynamic within the squad.
Furthermore, Berrada categorically confirmed it would take more than a handful of defeats to sway their opinion on their manager. “Do we still believe in Erik? Absolutely,” the Chief Executive stated before kickoff.
“We think Erik is the right coach for us, and we’re fully backing him.”
But, in reality, should this come as a surprise to anyone?
While neither he nor Ashworth were at the club when the Dutchman extended his contract, the financial ramifications of a severance package several weeks later are illogical for a proficient board.
Building towards a sustainable future does not mean winning one Premier League, nor is it positive to be reactionary.
This best-in-class setup desires perennial competition for top honours and understands the necessary steps to achieve its goals.
“You just have to be a little careful that you don’t react to short-term results,” Ashworth told Beyond United in July.
Speaking alongside Berrada on Sunday, he echoed the positive sentiment about the manager: “I’ve really enjoyed working with Erik for the last eight weeks.”
“I see my job is to support him in every way I possibly can, and whether that’s operationally, whether that’s with recruitment, whether that’s with medical, whether that’s with psychology, whether that’s training‑ground flow, it’s just to take as much of that off him to allow him to fully focus on the training pitch and the match tactical plan to deliver success for Manchester United.”
Both arrived during a highly publicised reshuffling of the backroom team, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe intent on returning the 20-time English champions to the head of the table.
Although Technical Director Jason Wilcox spearheaded the summer fact-finding mission regarding potential replacements in the hot seat, both officials remain adamant they have their man.

There is little to no benefit for these individuals to say one thing and do another, and there is no requirement for them to say anything.
Sometimes, a statement means exactly what it is.
