There were few positives from last weekend’s Premier League defeat to Liverpool, but the introduction of Toby Collyer has left many Manchester United supporters purring for more.
The 20-year-old replaced Casemiro at halftime, sealing an end to an unfortunate day for the veteran Brazilian.
Although there were few expectations for the debutant to inspire his side to overturn a two-goal deficit, his desire to battle for the badge was a fitting sight during a difficult day.
Collyer was understandably nervous but supplied a remarkable showing in winning 100% of his duels (7) and three tackles while creating one chance, completing 100% of his dribbles, and earning three ball recoveries.
It is a continuation of his encouraging pre-season form that received widespread applause across five fixtures and a 32-minute cameo in the Community Shield against Manchester City.
Furthermore, sources close to the Theatre of Red have supplied regular confirmation of his growth in training and an increased sense of confidence from Erik ten Hag.
A pathway to flourish at the highest level
Much like Kobbie Mainoo, the Worthing midfielder appears unfazed by the prospect of lining out for the senior team. His maturity and confidence on the field have already set him apart from many academy teammates.
“He’s [Collyer] now earned an opportunity. Today he was in the starting XI – that’s something – and we see how we can progress,” Ten Hag said following his side’s pre-season victory over Rangers.
Having spent time with individuals close to the player, it is abundantly clear that chief figures at Carrington are convinced they have another star on their hands.
A promise of increased participation in first-team activities – similar to Amir Ibragimov – and a pathway to regular minutes for Ten Hag’s side are achievable, with supporters already convinced of his abilities.
Alongside new arrival Manuel Ugarte, the Dutch manager is keen to solidify a battling mentality in the heart of his midfield – something his side appears to have lacked during times of adversity.
With the confirmation of the Red’s 25-man squad for the Europa League now released, Collyer joins Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho and Ethan Wheatley as B-list selections eligible to play as club-trained players.
Given the necessity for squad rotations throughout a busy season, game time will be readily available should the player continue on his upward trajectory.
His passing range and spatial awareness are commendable, with a positional sense and carrying ability that resembles another of Ten Hag’s former youngsters in Frenkie de Jong.
With Collyer sealing his new deal until 2027 with an option for a further year, the future remains bright in the engine room at the Theatre of Dreams.
