Uruguay international Manuel Ugarte arrived at Manchester United with accelerated expectations about his form-transforming capabilities.
The battle-hardened midfielder had earned a reputation as a combative ball-winner with a tenacious engine to tackle the physical demands of the Premier League.
However, despite shelling out an initial fee of £42 million for his services, Erik ten Hag opted to ease his new star into the first team, stating it could take several months to acclimatise.
Inevitably, in the melting pot of Old Trafford, 106 minutes played across six Premier League fixtures was enough for many to write the former Lisbon man off.
But United chiefs knew better, and under the interim watch of Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Ugarte has influenced four consecutive games from the opening whistle, delivering superior performances game-on-game.
We will never know whether Ten Hag had planned to unleash the South American star during this period, but his emergence in the heart of the midfield will delight Ruben Amorim.
A midfield revelation
As a football purist, I love to reminisce about memorable players and how they impacted the game.
When we strip this back further, the tactical approach of various individuals has always fascinated me. For anyone familiar with the work of Jonathan Wilson, his masterpiece ‘Inverting The Pyramid’ dissects the evolution of tactics, structure and formations.
The modern game has evolved into a formidable attacking ideology, with everything from wide-forwards to inverted full-backs and free-flowing number 10s all impacting the final phases of play.
Wilson’s studies have unearthed a plethora of setups and designs that have led us to this philosophy.
However, a successful team will always have individuals marshalling proceedings in the background, dictating possession and supplying endless opportunities to the creative players.
Manuel Ugarte is the definition of this very asset.
As many know, the French publication L’Équipe is not quick to embrace a new face, but the Uruguayan’s impact was so notable in Paris that he was declared a revelation.
The media focused on his fundamental understanding of the game and his ability to act as a necessary gel in a dressing room of charismatic personalities.
He is not a flamboyant footballer graced with technique and flair; he is an intelligent individual who appreciates space and positioning while utilising his understanding and anticipation.
Although his time in Manchester has supplied a small sample size of his potential, the latest meeting with Leicester solidified an astonishing brace of statistics.
The former Paris Saint-Germain star completed a staggering eight tackles against the Foxes, the largest figure obtained by a Manchester United player in the league since English Football analytics began tracking metrics.
Furthermore, his 5.5 tackles per 90 minutes lead the way in the current Premier League campaign.
These figures will not surprise those who follow the European game, with the Montevideo man sitting in the top 2% across all major defensive metrics in the last 365 days across the big five European leagues.
Per 90 | Percentile | |
Tackles | 4.18 | 99 |
Tackles + Interceptions | 6.17 | 99 |
Dribbles challenged | 3.99 | 99 |
Tackles won | 2.32 | 98 |
Dribbles tackled | 1.86 | 98 |
Interceptions | 1.99 | 98 |
Having worked under Amorim in Portugal, his understanding of the tactician’s structural requirements can prove advantageous during a necessary transition period.
Additionally, his performances alongside veteran Brazilian Casemiro has been a delight for the Stretford End, with his presence easing the defensive requirements on the former Madrid man.
During a difficult period for all involved with the 20-time English champions, the 32-year-old appeared lost and devoid of ideas in Ten Hag’s unit.
Thankfully, the emergence of his Uruguayan partner can potentially prolong his stay in the North West, opening the door to a formidable partnership when required.
