One of the few bright sparks in Manchester United’s tumultuous 2023/24 season was the emergence of teenage sensation Kobbie Mainoo.
Following a superb Premier League debut against Everton, the local talent captivated those in attendance with a display beyond his years.
Immediately, he was viewed as a revelation, enjoying a stellar campaign and starring in the FA Cup final victory over rivals Manchester City.
Despite his age, the teenager also starred for England during the memorable run to the final of Euro 2024.
However, a stint on the sidelines following a troublesome setback has led to suggestions of his impending troubles in a Ruben Amorim system, with some questioning his long-term future at the club.
An unfortunate injury setback
Mainoo has enjoyed a solid start to his second season in the first-team at Old Trafford despite inactivity since picking up a muscle issue in early October against Aston Villa.
However, he is now back in full training and, encouragingly, was fit enough to make the bench in Sunday’s stalemate at Ipswich Town.
Amorim chose to go with an experienced midfield duo of Christian Eriksen and Casemiro, with his former Sporting protege, Manuel Ugarte, coming off the bench in the second half.
The Uruguayan is likely to feature alongside Mainoo more often in the coming weeks as supporters await the emergence of the highly-regarded duo.
Pundits nonsensical claims
For all his impressive traits and endless ability, some question the youngster’s suitability to work under his new head coach.
A recent report from Fabrizio Romano stated that Amorim “loves” Mainoo as a player. But that hasn’t stopped Danny Murphy from chiming in with his controversial take.
The former Liverpool midfielder expects the Portuguese tactician to snub the England international.
“To play that role well, United’s midfielders will need to be more than just mobile, too,” Murphy told BBC Sport.
“They will both have to love the defensive side of the game and be able to spot danger and then be fast enough to stop it, I think (Manuel) Ugarte will be one of them.
“He needs a run of games to get his sharpness back, but we have seen glimpses of how good he is, for example, in the Europa League against Fenerbahce last month, and he has flourished under Amorim at Sporting before.
“As for who Ugarte will have alongside him, well, it will probably be someone who is not at the club at the moment.
“There is going to have to be activity in the next couple of transfer windows for them to get the type of player Amorim requires.”
It was certainly a surprising take by the ex-Premier League player and one that virtually no Manchester United supporter would agree with, especially given Mainoo has shown so much promise this past 12 months.
Recognising a generational talent
The wonderkid has often been compared to former AC Milan and Holland maestro Clarence Seedorf, and it’s easy to see the similarities given the Mancunian’s graceful style and calmness in possession.
He excels at receiving the ball and manipulating it in tight situations. Inevitably, this will aid his team’s transitions from back to front.
Undoubtedly, there is a level of maturity and composure in his game that is rare for someone so young.
Furthermore, he has shown that he can grab a goal – evidenced by stunning strikes last term against Wolves and Liverpool in the league and a derby cup final winner, too.
There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Kobbie Mainoo will play a crucial part under Ruben Amorim, and it will be intriguing to see if the Stockport lad can form a solid partnership with Ugarte in the United engine room over the coming months.
The kid is a generational talent, and Manchester United are lucky to have such a gem in their ranks, despite what pundits such as Murphy would have you believe.
