Manchester United are confident of agreeing a long-term contractual agreement with Kobbie Mainoo.
That is the message we have received from sources close to the club, with a shared belief in Ruben Amorim, his project and the future of the football team from a competitive aspect.
The latter has been a distinct concern for many squad members, given the exodus of high-ranking officials and the arrival of senior figures to reshape the footballing department at Old Trafford.
But having enjoyed time in the company of this new-look Portuguese backroom team, Mainoo and his teammates are convinced in the abilities of the former Sporting chief, with hopes of achieving Omar Berrada’s ambitious ‘Project 150’ becoming a shared belief.
Mainoo has never wanted to leave Manchester
It is no secret that the youngster adores the football club, having spent his entire teenage years developing his skills in the North West.
Since arriving at the academy at nine, his goal has been to break into the first team and secure a long-term future to replicate his local idols.
Talent, commitment and desire are just three words attributed to the Stockport lad during our time at the ground, and his breakthrough season in 2023-24 was no surprise to anyone at the club.
But, away from his fairytale story, Manchester United are fighting a financial battle that has surfaced because of the two-decade negligence of the Glazer family.
As such, the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules cast an endless shadow over Old Trafford. Inevitably, the allure of selling academy prospects for ‘pure profit’ has signalled a worrying sense of the unknown amongst the Stretford End.
At 19, Kobbie’s talents are evident for all to see, with various publications such as Sky Sports revealing that Chelsea are keen to benefit from United’s precarious situation and sent officials to “sound out Mainoo’s entourage and representatives”.
The Theatre of Red revealed last week that “barring travesty”, Mainoo would not be sold, and both parties were committed to sealing a long-term agreement.
Ineos and the Glazers are “Happy to seal a fruitful future” alongside the midfielder. But, painting a worrying picture of the financial state of the club, a conversation about his sale has occurred.
The midfielder held positive talks with officials in July, and verbal agreements were in place for a package worth approximately £4 Million per annum.
However, with the arrival of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his best-in-class team, uncertainty was the common word, and the player’s entourage was keen to take a backward step to assess the situation.
Having recently secured the long-term future of Amad Diallo, the emphasis was immediately shifted to Kobbie with hopes of a quick-fire resolution to build on the growing harmony at the Theatre of Dreams.
With two and a half years remaining on his current deal, the Theatre of Red is advised that the outlook is positive, and the Manchester United faithful may be able to breathe before long.
How crucial is Kobbie Mainoo to the success of this football club under Ineos and Ruben Amorim?
