A midweek trip to the Reale Arena in San Sebastian awaits Ruben Amorim and his Manchester United side, as La Liga’s Real Sociedad represent a stern round-of-16 Europa League opponent.
Following a heartbreaking FA Cup penalty defeat to Fulham at Old Trafford, a traumatic campaign has produced the unthinkable prospect of a season without European football in M16.
With a domestic standing of 14th in the Premier League, the 20-time English champions sit 11 points outside the European places with 11 fixtures remaining, and it is fair to suggest that the majority of the North Western eggs are in a continental basket.
But, as has been the case for the entire campaign, a lack of goals at critical times has deteriorated any form of momentum, with a disgruntled fanbase feeling lost ahead of Sunday’s planned protest before the arrival of Arsenal.
In Sociedad, the travelling Reds will encounter a passionate collection of Basque supporters eager to will their side towards improvement. Imanol Alguacil’s side have dropped to 9th in the table following back-to-back defeats and struggled to manage a busy schedule.
That said, previous encounters with Spanish opposition have left a lasting impression on the Old Trafford faithful, and there is every expectation of a bruising affair in the heart of Basque Country.
Manchester United team news
Crucially, Patrick Dorgu is available following his dismissal against Ipswich Town. His absence was felt against Fulham at the weekend, and his athleticism will provide a valuable weapon.
Furthermore, while injuries have plagued United throughout the season, Amorim has hinted at the prospect of having additional players back for the European journey.
A growing catalogue of first-team names has been unable to fulfil their duties for some time, with Mason Mount, Luke Shaw, Kobbie Mainoo, Amad, Lisandro Martinez, Altay Bayindir, Tom Heaton, Jonny Evans and Toby Collyer all frustrated with prolonged periods on the physio table.
Worryingly, birthday boy Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt await late assessments following individual niggles collected during a battling outing with the Cottagers. Maguire was forced to exit the field, while De Ligt appeared to be in some discomfort following a coming together with Andreas Pereira.
New signing Ayden Heaven is available for selection following his January move, but promising youngster Chido Obi is ineligible for European competition due to a lack of registration.
United have suffered defeat against Sociedad once in six meetings thanks to a Brais Mendez penalty at Old Trafford in a Europa League group fixture in 2022 (Won three, drawn two).
Interestingly, that remains their only goal scored against the one-time Manchester giants.
Amorim will hope his side can continue with their attacking prowess in the competition, having averaged 18.8 shots per game, the most of any team remaining in the Europa League.
Despite a barrage of Red troubles, that is the highest European shot ratio from any Manchester United team since 2003-04.
Furthermore, the 2016-17 winners have a positive away record against Spanish sides, losing only one of their previous eight in Europe (Won five, drawn two). Painfully, that defeat surfaced in a 3-0 quarter-final loss to Sevilla in this competition two years ago.
Without getting ahead of ourselves – we are not naive – victory in European football’s secondary cup competition would supply a route towards Champions League football and the undeniable financial benefits this would yield.
Although it seems rather unlikely, this squad has got to stand up and be counted during the most difficult period in recent memory. What better time to start than now?
