Sunderland teenager Chris Rigg is a summer transfer target for Manchester United
Manchester United are plotting a summer move for 16-year-old Sunderland player Chris Rigg – with a host of major clubs also interested in the teen sensation.
As reported by The Northern Echo earlier today, the versatile player has been heavily monitored by multiple clubs over the last 12 months, with Arsenal, Newcastle, and newly-crowned Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen all keen on acquiring his services.
But United are keen to attract the youngster to the club, with aspirations of integrating Rigg into the INEOS project that will unfold over the coming years.
Theatre of Red has been aware of United’s interest since the beginning of the month, with Shaun Connolly confirming the club had accelerated their intentions ahead of the summer.
The Hebburn native has firmly established himself in the Championship despite his age and inexperience at the Senior level, having made 21 appearances in English football’s second tier this campaign.
Like many clubs, the Reds have actively monitored the player throughout the campaign, with representation at youth and senior outings.
Sunderland will struggle to compete with financial packages offered at a higher level, but the allure of regular senior appearances may hold the key in any future talks.
As Rigg is a scholar, The Black Cats would be due financial compensation if he were to move on. Should United make a formal offer and see it rejected, an independent tribunal would handle the matter if the player requested to leave.
Given the club’s previous attempts at luring a Championship prodigy fell short with Jude Bellingham, a keen eye will be taken on any proposal for Rigg.
