If you possess a fraction of interest in continental football, the name Yan Diomande is likely one you are familiar with.
Although the teenager has made just 37 senior appearances during his short club career, his stock has risen significantly since joining RB Leipzig less than eight months ago.
Unsurprisingly, a plethora of standout performances have piqued the interest of some of European football’s biggest sides, with Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain at the top of an extensive list.
Capable of operating on either flank and comfortable with both feet, the Ivory Coast international appears destined to shine on the grandest of stages.
And with Christopher Vivell retaining his wisdom of the Bundesliga market, the prospect of adding another talented young player to an ambitious squad is music to Jason Wilcox’s ears.
Still, as is the case with elite names, the expectation of consistent Champions League competitiveness offers undeniable allure. Although United are building towards this, uncertainty remains.
That said, contrary to skewed opinion, the 20-time English champions are far from being a busted destination in the Premier League.
With a new-look group shifting fortunes, Diomande would find himself amongst similar styles with equal goals, including that of his compatriot Amad.
Why are Manchester United keen on Yan Diomande?
Having moved to the United States at a young age, and impressing through the high school ranks before joining La Liga outfit Leganes in January 2025, the Abidjan native has established himself as one of the most exciting prospects in Europe.
Despite making just 10 senior appearances for Los Pepineros, Leipzig officials saw enough to acquire his services for €20 million.
Yan responded with his first goal a month later in the DFB-Pokal, dazzling with a performance befitting a veteran forward.
The modern game has transitioned into one with a strong focus on athletic wing players who are capable of unlocking opposition with agile, flair-infused dribbling alongside sprinter-style acceleration and pace.
Today, he rivals household names for attacking output, amassing some of the most impressive metrics in progressive carries, key passes and completed dribblers across the top five European leagues.
Call me presumptuous, but any Manchester romantic would welcome a return to the glory days of old, with maurauding wide-play amidst a backdrop of noise from the Stretford End.
| 2025/26 Percentiles | Yan Diomande | Vinicius Junior | Khvicha Kvaratskhelia |
| Progressive carries | 97 | 100 | 98 |
| Dribbles completed | 92 | 98 | 95 |
| Non-penalty goals | 95 | 76 | 85 |
| npxG + xA | 86 | 92 | 98 |
| Assists | 88 | 71 | 88 |
| Key passes | 94 | 81 | 91 |
| Crosses completed | 45 | 37 | 75 |
| Minutes played | 1767 | 2009 | 1102 |
For some, these figures provide a fountain of knowledge about a player with an unknown ceiling for further growth. For others, they can be daunting.
Many supporters prefer to disregard metrics in favour of what they witness with their own eyes, and this is an equally fulfilling avenue.
The Ivorian embodies the quintessential character traits of a modern winger who is not limited to one specific role.
He is comfortable and capable with both feet, while playing on either side of the field and orchestrating attacking assaults from deep or high in the opposition third.
Crucially, for many of the United faithful, he relishes cutting inside from the left flank, a position that many Reds are crying out to be strengthened in the summer market.
We are unsure whether Michael Carrick will remain in charge for next season, but the interim coach has already discussed the possibility of targeting a left-winger specifically.
“I think you’re always looking at the balance of the team and the squad to give you the utmost flexibility, so it’s definitely something to look at, for sure,” he previously stated when replying to questions about the club’s intentions of bolstering the position.
Pressed again, Carrick said: “Quite possibly.”
Versatility has always been a desirable trait at Old Trafford, as previously outlined with in-depth scouting explorations held on Roger Fernandes.
When focusing on this season alone, Diomande has provided 11 goals and seven assists in 27 appearances, splitting his time on either side of the field.

Our sources have advised that Leipzig are not overly keen on losing their young star so soon into his German journey. Still, they are aware of the potential financial incentives.
We’re told the Bundesliga side would expect to receive a fee in the region of £85M for the teenager.
However, with reports of his desires to play at Anfield potentially scuppering a willingness to join a direct Premier League rival, it remains unclear if he would consider M16 as a viable option.
Nonetheless, United officials believe they can compete with any European rival in the market, particularly with a return to the Champions League.
Diomande represents an elite option with the capacity to compete for major individual honours in a matter of seasons.
All things considered, it will be easier to list the clubs that are not interested in his signature this summer. Eager Reds will hope that their best-in-class Ineos sporting team can deliver.
