The details behind the Amrabat move to Manchester
Sofyan Amrabat arrived at Manchester United on September 1, 2023, concluding a prolonged pursuit by Erik ten Hag on a deadline day loan deal.
United shelled out a fee of £8.5 Million for the player, including a clause with an option to buy for approximately £21.5M.
The Moroccan came with memories of memorable performances during the 2022 Qatar World Cup – starring in his nation’s historic fourth-placed finish.
But, given the nature of negotiations, the 27-year-old was deprived of a credible pre-season with his new teammates and entered a cauldron suffering from defensive injuries.
A series of underwhelming appearances – many out of position – left a sour taste across the fanbase, and plenty calling for an end to his playing time.
But, a credible end to the season – highlighted by a splendid Wembley outing against Manchester City – has left many considering what might be for the versatile midfielder.
What has been said in recent days
In the aftermath of the Reds FA Cup triumph, several players received questions about their future at the home of the 20-time champions.
Amrabat appeared to leave the door open for a potential stay at the club beyond his loan deal. “Do I already know what I’m going to do next year? No,” he told Ziggo Sport.
“We are going to talk. Staying is certainly an option. Look, I think it has been a very difficult season.
“For Manchester United, it needs to be much better, and also for me, personally. We are going to talk.
“Manchester United are the biggest club in the world, so who wouldn’t want to play football here?
“But all parties have to be happy with each other, so we will sit down now and see what happens.”
Is the player a worthwhile addition to this Manchester United rebuild
If you were to have asked this question at the beginning of April, you would have received a resounding no in response.
But, like anything, confidence can unlock a wealth of opportunities – and while the midfielder’s minutes were few throughout the campaign – his final four performances have given plenty of food for thought.
In terms of age, the Fiorentina player turns 28 in August and is approaching his prime years.
A standout characteristic over the final month has been how complimentary his style of play has been alongside Kobbie Mainoo.
Furthermore, given the nature of fluctuations in the transfer market, the possibility of Ten Hag’s side obtaining an international player with a proven pedigree for less than £25M is an anomaly.
The numbers behind the impressive displays
Amrabat featured heavily in the final four fixtures against Arsenal, Newcastle, Brighton and City – with the consensus being improved stability with his performances.
He took 232 touches, completing 171 of 190 attempted passes (90% completion). Additionally, while the figures highlight a desire for possession, the Morocco international supplied two key passes from deep.
In defence – while not perfect – he has proved capable of receiving the ball under pressure and offering an outlet for the imperious Mainoo. Furthermore, he supplied seven clearances, five key tackles, three blocked shots and two interceptions in 336 minutes of play.
Notably, there was a clear understanding between himself and Lisandro Martinez at the weekend, with the pair seemingly understanding each other’s movement.
Like everything at United, uncertainty is the common word – with the future of several individuals unclear.
But, when factoring in measures required for profit and sustainability, with the necessity to ensure a strong squad for 2024/25, Amrabat may be one of the easier decisions.
