Forged in Manchester – Jonny Evans is a Red
At the tender age of 36, Jonny Evans has completed his Manchester United medal collection with the addition of Saturday’s FA Cup triumph.
Having tasted success in the famous cup with Leicester City in 2021, few could have thought he would climb the famous Wembley steps once more following his release from The Foxes in 2023.
But Evans is no ordinary footballer, and his commitment to maintaining his extraordinary conditioning has propelled his legacy as one of the most accomplished players to rise through the United Academy.
Appreciating the undeniable talent he possesses
To truly value the achievements of the Belfast-born defender, you must first acknowledge the difficulties of competing in the Premier League.
Take Kalidou Koulibaly, for example. He arrived at Chelsea in a mega-money move from Napoli, having generated a reputation as one of the finest central defenders in the modern game.
Less than one year and 32 appearances later, the Senegal international departed for Al-Hilal, with Blues owner Todd Boehly emphasising his struggles at a Sportico conference in Los Angeles.
As per Mirror Sport, the billionaire stated, “Koulibaly came over from Serie A, and he told me one time – ‘In Serie A, I get to think and then run, but in the Premier League, I have to run while I think, and I’m still adjusting to that’.”
At 36, Evans has made an astonishing 379 top-flight appearances, even featuring for 17 minutes during the crucial Wembley showpiece.
He’s seen it all and he’s won it all
For many, one of the unforgivable errors made during Louis van Gaal’s tenure was sanctioning the sale of the Irishman to West Brom in 2015. It remains yet another ‘what if’ moment during a difficult period.
Upon departing, Evans had collected three league titles, a Champions League and a Club World Cup, alongside two League Cup triumphs during a seven-season first-team journey that returned 131 Premier League appearances.
While he would go on to claim FA Cup honours with Leicester during the 2020/21 season, not even the most hardcore of rivals would deny the veteran the smile he achieved after the weekend’s magnificent 2-1 victory.
A close bond with Erik ten Hag
With the players and coaching staff enjoying some off-time for their summer vacations, uncertainty remains over the defender’s future.
While daily speculation mounts about Erik ten Hag, the Belfast man was vocal in support and admiration for the Dutchman.
“I think, on a personal level, he’s been amazing for me. I can only thank him for that,” he was quoted as saying in RTE Sport.
“I have a good relationship with him, so I hope he stays.
“Since I came back in the summer, he’s had no problems putting me in and trusting in me.
“You want that from the manager – to show that trust and belief in you. He did that.”
A return intended to maintain fitness resulted in another extraordinary chapter for the Old Trafford favourite.
Following an injury crisis that could result in a change of manager, the 36-year-old has rolled back the years and categorically cemented his name in the history books of this famous club.
With the suggestion that he would be willing to stay on for another year, he may not be finished just yet.
Jonny Evans is a Red, he hates Scousers!
