Throughout a season of endless injuries, Erik ten Hag’s defence was perhaps the worst affected – with stars like Lisandro Martinez absent for significant spells.
But, through adversity, green shoots often appear within the ranks of Manchester United, and in Willy Kambwala, a defensive option for the next decade has emerged.
The 19-year-old answered the call of his under-pressure manager and earned ten first-team appearances during his breakout campaign.
A series of impressive displays has seen his passion embraced by the adoring Manchester faithful, with supporters eager to see how high the youngster can climb.
Following in the footsteps of giants
Born in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kambwala had aspirations to emulate the legendary figures from the region – such as the iconic Claude Makelele.
At five, his family departed for France and settled in the commune of Les Ulis, with his passion for football beginning with Elan Chevilly Larue and Les Ulis before joining Sochaux at 14.
Like so much of his career, his performances and physicality led to early recognition, inevitably joining the ranks of the France U16 squad.
Montbéliard offered the defender a platform to impress, and he happily obliged, earning regular recognition from scouts across the continent.
His first taste of the Northwest derby occurred in July 2020, with Liverpool rivalling the 20-time champions of England to acquire his services.
But this was an easy decision for the French youth international, achieving his childhood dream of signing for United and replicating Makelele’s accomplishment of landing in the Premier League.
Injury, adversity and determination
Life was good for the teen – he had signed for his boyhood club and was acting captain of the French underage side.
He may have been young, but initial performances on the training field and early exhibitions had already caught the attention of the first-team coaching staff.
But, as is often the case for promising footballers, injury struck weeks into his Manchester journey, seeing the defender sidelined for a staggering eleven months.
He would not return until September 2021.
Kambwala, despite his younger years, is made of stern stuff and, following a determined recovery plan, returned as an inspired 17-year-old off the bench in a U18s Premier League Cup victory against Birmingham City.
He played the final 20 minutes in an 8-2 victory and signed his first professional contract the following month.
Normal service had resumed.
An inevitable introduction
The prospect made his first-team debut for Ten Hags side at 19 against West Ham in December 2023, starting and playing 84 minutes. His composure was evident, leaving supporters purring for more.
Yes, injuries forced the manager’s hand and accelerated his advancement to the senior team, but it was unsurprising to those who followed his youth journey – it was always a case of when.
He made cameo appearances from the bench afterwards – preparing him for his second start against Liverpool in April.
The side earned a hard-fought 2-2 draw, with a notable performance from Kambwala that saw 100% of his ground duels won, with impressive technical ability throughout. He would earn nationwide recognition.
Kambwala started his 2nd consecutive Premier League fixture against Bournemouth six days later, recovering from a cruel slip to deliver a credible performance. At a time when the FA Cup champions endured an unmanageable injury crisis, he displayed mental strength and composure beyond his years throughout.
The Wembley success offered the boy who ‘dreamt about Man United’ an opportunity to celebrate a remarkable occasion with a squad that has embraced his talents and infectious personality.
What to expect in moving forward
At 19, the Kinshasa talent has grasped an opportunity to fight for a senior spot, earning double-digit appearances – each offering a unique experience.
He has solidified a reputation as an intelligent defender with pace, technical prowess and a strong awareness of his defensive surroundings.
Furthermore, he has cultivated a relationship with the fanbase.
With an Ineos rebuild on the horizon, the emergence of this talented boy has supplied the possibility that the future of this troubled defence has already arrived.
