As we enter the final few days of the summer transfer window, Manchester United supporters anticipate a late flurry of activity – with the club still assessing several potential targets.
Thus far, it has been a good window for the North West giants, with the recruitment team already signing off on four senior acquisitions.
However, one area of particular note is the left-back position, with Fulham defender Antonee Robinson a player of interest.
The Old Trafford faithful haven’t seen Dutch full-back Tyrell Malacia in almost 18 months, while regular starter Luke Shaw has also had an injury-ravaged year.
According to a recent report in GiveMeSport, Robinson has appeared on the Red Devils’ radar, with the 27-year-old impressing the Stretford End on Premier League opening day.
Injury woes offer plenty of reason for reflection
The Cottagers had been linked with a move for Ferdi Kadioglu as one of their primary targets before the Turkish international completed a switch to Brighton.
A potential transfer would have opened the door for a big-money move for their American defender, with reports stating Erik ten Hag saw the player as an ideal option to address their injury woes.
However, any deal would be contingent on the Londoners signing a replacement in the current window.
An Old Trafford move now appears unlikely, but with Shaw’s future in M16 under scrutiny, it would make sense to revisit the situation later.
Ten Hag has utilised Diogo Dalot on the left side of his backline at the start of the campaign, and new boy Noussair Mazraoui is also comfortable when deployed in the same role if the need arises.
A long-term position of interest
Harry Amass caught the eye in pre-season, but the club feel it is still a little early to thrust the teenager into the thick of the action.
As highlighted by Fabrizio Romano in March – Old Trafford chiefs were always interested in bringing in a new left-back this summer – with several targets shortlisted.
They were said to have considered names such as Milos Kerkez of Bournemouth, Wolves defender Rayan Ait-Nouri, Girona star Miguel Gutierrez and the previously-mentioned Kadioglu.
However, a concrete proposal never materialised, and it will be interesting to see if anything comes of the apparent Robinson links.
The former Everton and Wigan full-back had a strong fitness record last term – only missing one Premier League game all year – and that sort of reliability and consistency is what United require.
The Milton Keynes-born defender also has plenty of experience in the English game and is approaching his peak years, so you would expect him to excel alongside elite-level teammates.
Any move could be an astute bit of business from the Manchester outfit if they decide to pursue it.
Do you think Antonee Robinson would be a good signing for United?
