A challenging campaign continues to present issues for the Manchester United board after a 2-1 defeat against Brighton in the third round of the FA Cup.
Darren Fletcher led his side out at Old Trafford, aiming to lift the Theatre of Dreams following the surprise midseason departure of Ruben Amorim.
But goals from Brajan Gruda and Danny Welbeck, either side of half-time, cemented a third exit at this stage of the competition in 40 years.
Benjamin Sesko reduced the deficit with a late headed effort and provided a jolt of adrenaline to those in the ground. Still, the visitors comfortably saw the game out.
It’s now four outings without a win for United and a result that confirms another season without silverware, barring the most miraculous of endings to a dismal schedule.
For Jason Wilcox and Co, all eyes are eagerly fixated on their decision for Amorim’s replacement as a disjointed first-team squad craves leadership.
Groundhog Day for Manchester United in defeat to Brighton
Fletcher named an attractive starting XI for Sunday’s FA Cup outing, containing a rare place for the fit-again Kobbie Mainoo in midfield.
The 20-year-old had gone from a mainstay in the side to a minimal role under Amorim, but played his part in a promising start for United.
Regardless, despite owning the majority of possession and creating several early opportunities, Brighton took the lead against the run of play through Gruda after 12 minutes.
The Seagulls nearly doubled their advantage within 60 seconds when Senne Lammens offloaded to Welbeck inside his own area, before somehow recovering to save his blushes.
Fletcher’s side responded well and continued to drive forward, bringing the best out of an in-form Jason Steele with several long-range attempts.
Nonetheless, despite the efforts of Bruno Fernandes, Matheus Cunha, and an ambitious attack, United were unable to find a clinical touch in the final third.
Say what you will about the media’s insistence on dwelling on a Portuguese style, but many of the same glaring issues were on show throughout another frustrating half of football.

Both sides remained unchanged for the restart, as a vocal Stretford End embraced Fletch’s calls for a 12th man’s support.
Much like the opening half, his team started well but faded following the initial exchanges, as Fabian Hurzeler applauded the transitional work of his group.
A largely quiet quarter signalled the first roll of the dice from the interim coach as Shea Lacey and Joshua Zirkzee replaced Mason Mount and Mainoo.
Again, it was the visitors who profited as Welbeck doubled their lead within minutes with a powerful effort from the edge of the area, striking from lacklustre defensive work outside the box.
United continued to press, but much of their final third presence was predictable and easily repelled by their guests.
That said, Lacey was again impressive with his technique and forward intent – that must not be forgotten.
Sesko pulled one back with five minutes to play, powering a fine header low and past the outstretched hand of Steele to set up a grandstand finish.
Until a distraught Lacey received two yellow cards in quick succession following a mistimed challenge and a juvenile response to a referring decision on the touchline.
Fletcher marched onto the field at the final whistle and was visibly aggravated with the officiating team, engaging in a notable exchange with the trio.
The result means United will only play 40 games this season – 38 in the league plus both outings in the Carabao and FA Cup.
Staggeringly, you must travel back over 110 years for the last time the Reds played 40 matches or fewer. It is also the first time since 1981-82 that the side has been eliminated from both domestic cups in their opening round.
