The 2026 Premier League summer transfer window closed on Tuesday evening, bringing to an end an arduous 79 days for the Manchester United fanbase.
As is now common practice, many spent their time fabricating links to various players, in turn setting unrealistic expectations and driving unnecessary social narratives.
Some can read past the nonsense, while others cling to the feintest hope of bravado that would see a Real Madrid star come knocking.
Either way, Ineos set their stall early, with an evident desire to bolster their midfield for this season and well into the future.
Say what you will about the activity at other clubs, but in Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba, there is very little, if anything, that people can genuinely dislike.
The trio supplies everything from youth to experience, domestic knowledge, and a range of skills to complement a variety of competitive settings, adding to last summer’s attacking overhaul.
Regardless, although Senne Lammens has been acquired between the posts, a lack of urgency in tending to defence has left many questioning this sporting department’s ambitions.
As we outlined in our comprehensive financial analysis, many of these queries are valid, particularly alongside the memories of a 22-year-old Abdul Fatawu shunning Luke Shaw’s top-tier standing.
But four days out from a third Premier League test of the season, we must turn our attention to the here and now, and what Michael Carrick is working with for the upcoming campaign.
Few people, if any, will look at this United squad and state that it is the finished article, Carrick included.
There are questions about both full-back areas and the five senior options vying for a central partnership. Whether through age, injuries, or public perception, all have questions to answer.
Still, there has been a significant investment in midfield and attack. And Lammens is, without question, already one of the more assured goalkeeping names in Europe.
Such is the nature of reporting that some are routinely convinced that black is white when speaking about Manchester United, and the ramifications generate all sorts of negative connotations.
Shaw has had a hard time of late, and appears to have lost a yard. And Diogo Dalot could turn water to wine and would still fail to win over his naysayers. Concerns about both are relevant.
Equally, Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez’s injury records are heartbreaking, alongside an ageing Harry Maguire and the youthful pairing of Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven.
But when all are fit, De Ligt and Martinez are a far better partnership than many give credit for, and with Baleba sitting in front of them, there is ample quality within that central structure.
I’m aware that the likelihood of retaining that quartet for an entire season is slim. But three of the group are ready and waiting, and Mathijs is closing in on his long-awaited return.
As you know, not all ex-professional footballers can make the switch to punditry, and some statements are better left unaddressed.
But there is knowledge in experience, and despite the evolution of the modern game, some legendary figures can offer relevant feedback during questionable times.
“You attack as a team, and you defend as a team, and sometimes, especially now, the way Man United are, they need a bit of protection,” Steve Bruce stated on talkSPORT.
“At times, they’re wide open, and no matter how good your defenders are, you can not be wide open at Old Trafford, like they were, and teams running through the middle,” he continued.
“Hopefully, defensively, in midfield areas, they’ll be better. That’s where you need, you know, Cunha and Mbeumo; they don’t really want to do this part, going backwards. They want to attack, and that’s their mainstay.
“You’ve got to get the balance right.”
There is so much truth in Bruce’s words, and Carrick will be all too aware of this, as will Steve Holland. But as we know, one defeat for United can cause more than a hint of alarm, and Hull provided that and more.
Understandably, congested fixtures across league and cup outings will require ample rotation, and here we will witness Carrick’s true credentials.
There are ample attacking avenues, with Bruno Fernandes, Benjamin Sesko, Marcus Rashford, Amad, Mason Mount, Joshua Zirkzee and Shea Lacey joining Cunha and Mbeumo.
In midfield, Santos, Tielemans and Baleba supplement Kobbie Mainoo, with the attacking element in Mount and Bruno. Not to mention the Fletcher brothers in reserve, who, despite nonsensical claims of nepotism, are a talented pair with potential.
At 20 and 19, Yoro and Heaven are already being disregarded by some. But with 92 senior appearances between them, officials firmly believe they possess the future defensive pairing at Old Trafford.
And although Patrick Dorgu offers intrigue in attack, he was initially brought to the club as a left-sided full-back to rival Shaw, with Harry Amass receiving a welcome opportunity to stake his claim.
Not forgetting Noussair Mazraoui and his undeniable versatility to operate anywhere across the backline. The Moroccan is only ever one poor pass away from being disregarded; such is the fickle nature within subsections of support.
Although he may view this season as an audition for a prolonged stay, like Maguire, Martinez and others, it is foolhardy to write off his ability for the sake of making a point.
Call me a purveyor of toxic positivity, but I see little value in focusing on what doesn’t exist at the club. Instead, I prefer to acknowledge talent and quality alongside obvious areas of concern.
Depending on who you listen to, you could be convinced that United were destined for a relegation scrap. But, in all honesty, there is quality in this squad, and I believe Carrick will utilise it.
