A productive Summer transfer window continues to blossom for Manchester United, with a much-needed defensive injection sealed this evening.
Matthijs de Ligt arrives on a five-year deal with an option for an additional year, offering a catalogue of experiences collected in Amsterdam, Turin and Munich.
Noussair Mazraoui has penned a contract until 2028 with an option to extend for another year – opting to join De Ligt in departing the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich.
The duo previously played under Erik ten Hag at Ajax and are accustomed to his tactical demands and attacking philosophies.
Following a long-term injury to Leny Yoro and news that Luke Shaw will miss the start of the campaign, supporters are sighing a breath of relief with this evening’s confirmation.
A Dutch Delight
De Ligt is a formidable prospect at the heart of defence, with undeniable physicality, pace and a desire to initiate attacks.
The former Golden Boy winner is a mainstay in The Netherlands’ defence, with many anticipating a lethal partnership with Lisandro Martinez.
“As soon as I heard that Manchester United wanted me, I felt an excitement about the opportunity for a new challenge at such a historic club,” the 25-year-old told the club’s official website.
“In the conversations that followed, I was impressed by the vision that the football leadership set out and the role they saw for me in it.”
A 2019 winner of the famous Kopa Trophy, the Leiderdorp man possesses a decorated time in the game despite his age.
Furthermore, he holds distinctive leadership skills, with Ten Hag naming him the youngest captain of Ajax in March 2018.
“Erik ten Hag shaped the early stages of my career, so he knows how to get the best out of me, and I cannot wait to work with him again,” he continued.
“I know what it takes to succeed at the highest level, and I’m determined to continue that record at this special club.”
A versatile attacking full-back
Mazraoui is a product of the famous Amsterdam Academy – harnessing his talents through the various underage levels between 2006 – 2016.
Like De Ligt, United’s manager presented the avenue for first-team football, beginning a five-year partnership in 2018.
“Erik ten Hag played an important part in my development as a player, so it is exciting to be reuniting with him as I enter the prime years of my career,” he told United’s official site.
“I know what he expects from his players, and I will give everything to help the group be successful.”
Also a native of Leiderdorp, the Moroccan international has won four league titles and played a pivotal role in his side’s fourth-placed World Cup finish in 2022.
He supplies an elite mentality and sense of maturity to aid the dressing room, a trait that new sporting director Dan Ashworth has identified.
“Having already won a number of trophies in his career, we know that Noussair’s winning mentality will be a real asset to the group as we work together to deliver the success required of Manchester United,” he told media this evening.
With the Premier League launching on Friday evening, United welcome Fulham to Old Trafford.
The Stretford End will be eager to see the defensive duo in action, with both in contention to feature – pending registration and ease of integration into the first team.
Given the nature of fixture congestion with a European schedule, squad depth is essential – with the new ‘best in class hierarchy’ aiming to address any glaring issues.
