The ambition of Manchester United under its new ownership has delivered a sense of hope and optimism across their global fanbase.
Early action, decisive decisions and football people signing off on football matters have seen the arrival of Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro, with deals for Manuel Ugarte and Matthijs de Ligt considered a credible possibility.
Furthermore, with the departures of several first-team players, Erik ten Hag has begun restructuring his squad.
However, with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) looming, additional outgoings are paramount for plans, with Casemiro, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Jadon Sancho facing an uncertain future.
Sales are necessary to continue progress
Following progressive talks during the highly publicised end-of-season review, Ten Hag will lead the Manchester Revolution.
The Dutch tactician is meticulous in his approach and adamant about the player profile he requires.
Alongside the newly recruited duo of Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rene Hake, the trio are formulating an assault on the English game.
However, while acquisitions are necessary, the manager acknowledges the requirement for more departures.
“That is also obvious (club needs to sell to raise funds),” the former Ajax man told The Athletic.
“But we want to have a strong squad, as strong as possible.”
Scott McTominay has forged a reliable career in the North West – often proving the difference in pivotal moments for his side.
However, with a transformation of United’s midfield set for an invigoration with the arrival of Uruguayan star Ugarte, playing time may prove difficult for the academy graduate.
With a year remaining on his contract, a decision on his future is required this Summer.
“We want to actually keep him because he’s a very important player for our squad,” the FA Cup-winning manager continued.
“We’ve seen what he can contribute last season. When we had the sixes and he could play in a more advanced role, he’s a highly interesting player for our team.”
A primary focus on defensive options
The Old Trafford outfit relied heavily on 36-year-old Jonny Evans following a horrendous catalogue of injuries throughout a traumatic season.
The signing of Yoro following the departure of Raphael Varane has provided some assurance – with the hierarchy reportedly keen on another defensive signing.
High-profile pursuits of Jarrad Branthwaite and De Ligt supply further evidence of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s desire to return the club to the pinnacle of English football.
“Competition (with defenders), yes, we need quality players,” Ten Hag added.
“But you also need quantity because the season is even tougher than last season so we have to be ready for that.”
With ample time for more swift activity in the Summer market, the 20-time English champions appear to be acting like a club of old.
It is a heartwarming sight for the avid support of this legendary football club, with many of the younger generation in disbelief.
