Following three weeks of speculation and false exclusives, David Ornstein has confirmed that Erik ten Hag will remain as manager of Manchester United.
The news concludes a drawn-out saga that began on May 22 when Gianluca Di Marzio stated Ten Hag was to leave the club in the summer.
From there, a wash of daily sources and credible information declared everything from dismissal – regardless of the result in the FA Cup final – to suggestions of handshakes before the Arsenal fixture on May 12.
But, at 10:10 PM on Tuesday, the always-reliable Ornstein confirmed the Dutchman would stay and hold talks over a contract extension, sealing an end to daily turmoil inflicted upon a tormented fanbase.
A catalyst for momentum
Given the media circus that has materialised, you’d nearly forget that it is three weeks Saturday since United famously scalped their City rivals at Wembley.
The result, similar to Sir Alex Ferguson’s famous FA Cup moment in 1990, could act as a catalyst for momentum at the club – particularly under a new footballing hierarchy.
Following that heroic display – on the field and touchline – negotiations will commence towards extending the manager’s contract. The current terms run until June 2025 – with an option to extend by 12 months.
That victory was, of course, a second trophy in as many seasons for United – a remarkable feat for a man who dealt with every abject statement thrown his way.
The small matter of squad development shall take centre stage, with a collection of bodies anticipated to make their way in and out of the club.
What to expect over the coming months
Focus can now turn to football, with a trip to Lerkendal Stadion to embrace a friendly meeting with Rosenberg on July 15.
That kicks off a series of fixtures with the Reds making the trip to Murrayfield to face Rangers before jetting off to the USA for a meeting with Arsenal in SoFi stadium.
Eager supporters will be able to cheer on Ten Hag in the flesh alongside new additions who will join the club over the coming weeks and months.
With the summer transfer window to open on Friday, a barrage of speculation has already begun, with Bologna’s Joshua Zirkzee the latest touted with a move to Old Trafford.
