Following a summer of significant change at Manchester United, a notable overhaul of Erik ten Hag’s coaching department witnessed the departure of squad-favourite Benni McCarthy.
The former striker spent two seasons in the North West aiding Ten Hag and mentoring players like Marcus Rashford daily.
However, after a notably poor start to the current campaign, United sit 14th in the table on eight points – their worst start in Premier League history.
With such, the future of the Dutchman is once again front and centre, with rampant speculation following a highly-publicised London meeting between Ineos officials.
But, despite growing concerns about his suitability and a media witch-hunt to shovel endless negativity, McCarthy has moved to offer support for the under-pressure tactician.
Weighing in on the Manchester United merry-go-round
Speaking with South African broadcaster SuperSport, the former Ajax hitman has weighed in on the conversation about a potential replacement.
“Who else is better than Ten Hag?” McCarthy pondered when pressed on the most scrutinised role in England.
“You’re not gonna get many managers unless Pep decides to change from Man City to United – then maybe you might have a change in fortunes, but other than that, I can’t see who’s better than Ten Hag.”
It has become fashionable to dismiss the capabilities of the 54-year-old, with a plethora of disgruntled supporters indulging in an expected media narrative.
So, for those keen to witness growth in the side under a new best-in-class hierarchy, this public show of support is a welcome read.
With understandable frustration and uncertainty about the security of his position, a somewhat favourable run of fixtures offers an opportunity for a surge in momentum and confidence.
It begins against Brentford on Saturday, 19 October, with Old Trafford demanding a return to the days of old.
