Manchester United overcame the blow of conceding an early goal and being reduced to ten men to battle to a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Ipswich Town in the Premier League.
In a madcap first half, Ipswich took the lead after only four minutes when Jaden Philogene pounced on a mix-up between Patrick Dorgu and Andre Onana to tuck the ball home gleefully.
United levelled it up on 22 minutes when Bruno Fernandes’ whipped free-kick was headed into his net by Ipswich midfielder Sam Morsy.
The hosts took the lead moments later when Matthijs de Ligt swept home the rebound after Alex Palmer had only parried Diogo Dalot’s goal-bound effort.
Inevitably, disaster struck, as Dorgu saw red for a high challenge on Omari Hutchinson just before the interval.
The visitors, perhaps buoyed by their numerical advantage, equalised in first-half stoppage time when Philogene’s inswinging cross flew past everybody and nestled in the net.
But Harry Maguire powered home what proved to be the winning goal just two minutes into the second half as the English defender met an accurate Fernandes corner to restore his side’s lead and give them a much-needed victory.
With much to digest after a crazy game in Manchester, here are our five talking points.
Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United show resilience
The Old Trafford outfit was hit with a double blow right on the stroke of halftime after losing a man and conceding a goal almost immediately.
As deflating as this must have been for the team, they refused to allow their heads to drop, as we have seen in the past. Instead, they rolled their sleeves up and fought for the win.
That resilience and commitment to the cause will please Amorim, and he will rightly want to see more and more of this between now and season’s end.
There is plenty to question regarding quality, but desire is absolutely not in doubt.
Patrick Dorgu has a night to forget
It was a nightmare evening for the January recruit, who was making only his fourth appearance against Ipswich.
The wing-back was partially at fault when his attempted back-pass to Onana handed Philogene a simple tap-in early on.
Things worsened before the break when he received his marching orders following a VAR review for a dangerous challenge on Omari Hutchinson.
It will go down as a forgettable night for Dorgu, who will now receive a three-match ban, but the 20-year-old has enjoyed a solid start to life in the North West overall, so should not feel too disheartened.
Bruno Fernandes proves his worth again!
Bruno was at the heart of everything good about United on Wednesday evening and earned the Man of the Match award for his efforts against Kieran McKenna’s side.
The 30-year-old playmaker set up the first goal with a wicked free-kick diverted in via the head of Morsy to get the hosts back on terms before delivering a deep corner that led to a goalmouth scramble before De Ligt buried the ball into the net.
Crucially, the skipper set Maguire up for the winner with another priceless delivery in the second half.
The former Sporting Lisbon man is crucial to United, and the club should do everything possible to ensure his future lies in Manchester well beyond this season.
Andre Onana’s form can no longer be excused
Onana put a difficult first half of his debut season behind him to carry a sense of confidence into the 2024-25 campaign. However, his form has taken a nosedive, and critical errors have started to stack up.
After two high-profile mistakes against Brighton in January, the 28-year-old didn’t cover himself in glory against Ipswich on Wednesday either.
Whilst the first goal could be attributed to Dorgu’s misjudgement, Onana simply did not need to come racing out of his goal and put the 20-year-old under pressure.
He was also poorly stationed for the second. Having hesitated, the Cameroonian failed to deal with a routine cross that skimmed past him and into the net.
United and Amorim may have a big decision in the summer.
Yoro was superb at the back
It was perhaps Leny Yoro’s best performance in a red shirt, as the young French defender performed admirably against the Premier League strugglers.
Signed from Ligue 1 side Lille last July, Yoro suffered a broken metatarsal on the pre-season tour and missed the first five months of this campaign.
The 19-year-old has taken his time to find his feet with Amorim dipping the Saint Maurice native in and out of his starting XI and building up his experience gradually.
He was cool, calm and collected on Wednesday night and seemed to be showing glimmers of why the club put so much faith in luring him.
One of Yoro’s standout moments came deep in opposition territory when he performed a crowd-pleasing ‘Cruyff turn’ before rolling the ball across for Hojlund who chose to dummy instead of taking on a shot.
It was an impressive display from Yoro and should give him confidence. Let’s hope he can continue to grow in stature.
