The necessity for a reaction has become a common trend in Manchester since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson, and once more, it is a requirement against Liverpool on Sunday.
Following last weekend’s disappointing stoppage-time defeat in Brighton, Erik ten Hag has been prepping his Manchester United side for the visit of Arne Slot.
The Merseysiders have enjoyed a perfect start to life without Jurgen Klopp, collecting six points from two Premier League outings, and yet to concede.
But, while United were unfortunate in defeat on the South Coast, there have been ample signs of an improved structure this season and positives to take into the weekend.
Team News
Having addressed the media this afternoon (Friday, 30 August), Ten Hag has confirmed he will ‘have a similar squad’ to the one he brought to the Amex.
Despite returning to grass, Rasmus Hojlund remains unavailable for selection until after the upcoming international break.
Additionally, Mason Mount will miss a few games following yesterday’s confirmation of his minor muscle issue.
They are joined by the injured quartet of Leny Yoro, Tyrell Malacia, Luke Shaw and Victor Lindelof on the sidelines.
Slot has welcomed Federico Chiesa to Anfield, where he will join his teammates in training today but is unlikely to feature at Old Trafford.
Curtis Jones remains the only injury doubt for Liverpool.
The facts before the fixture
Since Sir Alex retired, September has proven a difficult month for the Reds – losing 13 of 35 fixtures.
Ten Hag’s side endured defeat in three of their four Premier League outings during the same period last season – against Arsenal, Brighton and Crystal Palace.
Furthermore, United have not enjoyed recent league meetings with Liverpool, winning only one of the previous twelve fixtures.
But that victory came during the 2022-23 campaign and was followed up with last season’s memorable 4-3 FA Cup win and a 2-2 league draw in Manchester in April.
Despite several injuries, there is a quiet confidence building ahead of the meeting in the North West, with momentum following a promising summer transfer window.
