Erik ten Hag highlighted an underwhelming performance following his side’s defeat to Rosenborg in Norway, stating it was not the standard for top football.
With the focus immediately shifting to today’s meeting with Rangers at Murrayfield, his Manchester United players were expected to respond.
A largely comfortable outing saw the Reds enjoy a two-nil victory, with plenty of positives for the remainder of the pre-season.
The Starting XI enjoyed the lion’s share of possession in the first half with a more noticeable cutting edge to their general interplay.
The second-half outfield contingent of ten academy players aged 21 or younger withstood an expected fightback to leave Scotland with the win.
Amad excelled on his return
Unsurprisingly, with additional first-team players and extra pre-season training in their legs, confidence was on show from the off.
Newly acquired Leny Yoro started the fixture alongside Jonny Evans, with all eyes on the 18-year-old sensation.
Thankfully, he settled confidently, looking assured in possession, distribution and positional awareness. It may have been a friendly encounter, but it was a promising 45 minutes for the debutant.
Toby Collyer started ahead of the Frenchman and carried out the sweeping duties of a holding midfielder proficiently throughout the half. He shielded his defence and displayed a notable engine, looking energetic and willing.
Jadon Sancho and Amad Diallo occupied both flanks and offered continuous threat – particularly through the Ivorian.
It became apparent early on that his trickery and composure would supply a catalyst for the side’s attacking outlet – providing Ethan Wheatley with a stellar opportunity to open the scoring after 17 minutes, but for some fine last-gasp Rangers defending.
Amad went close himself from a fine free-kick after 22 minutes before rifling home with a splendid effort after 39.
The impressive Mason Mount collected the ball on the half, bursting forward and offloading to the winger before continuing his run and drawing the defender.
Diallo moved into the space provided, cut inside and drove a powerful low effort into the bottom corner. It was nothing more than he deserved.
United should have doubled their lead six minutes later through Sancho after more splendid work from the Ivory Coast international. But the returning attacker blazed his effort over the crossbar from 12 yards.
Andre Onana presented a welcome dynamic in his distribution throughout the opening half and dealt with a handful of long-range efforts.
Both sides left the field to applause, with Ten Hag again readying his youthful charges for the second 45.

Ten replacements entered the field with Onana the only Red aged over 21.
With the youthful side attempting to acclimatise to proceedings, the Gers opted to stick with more of their starters, gaining additional space and growing into attacking thirds.
To their credit, the home side fashioned some decent opportunities, with Danilo’s acrobatic effort the pick of their work – forcing an impressive stop from United’s number one.
Much to the dismay of the Scottish contingent, Joe Hugill doubled the Premier League side’s lead after 70 minutes with a sublime finish from a rare second-half opportunity.
Some fine midfield play from Maximillian Oyedele ended with a crafty well-weighted pass – leading to the onrushing Hugill smashing the ball into the roof of the net.
Ten Hag and his side have a week of preparations before their next outing against Arsenal at SoFi Stadium on Sunday, 28 July.
With a plethora of returning players expected for the US tour, it remains to be seen how many academy prospects will feature stateside.
