Andre Onana returned to the Manchester United first team for today’s two-nil pre-season victory against Rangers.
The goalkeeper initially struggled to acclimatise to English life, with many holding him responsible for the side’s Champions League exit.
His performances grew as his confidence rose, leaving the majority of supporters apprehensively happy with the charismatic keeper.
In Altay Bayindir, the Old Trafford outfit has a 26-year-old talent in reserve, chomping for an opportunity to build on his solitary FA Cup appearance following a move from Fenerbahce.
However, reports suggest United are considering bypassing both with a move for Ukrainian shot-stopper Andrei Lunin as their new number one.
Poised for a new challenge
The 25-year-old has been with Real Madrid since 2018, with several loan spells to Spanish sides since he arrived.
Following a horrendous injury to Thibaut Courtois last term, the Krasnohrad native enjoyed his most active spell.
According to El Nacional – Spain via 90mins, United are growing impatient with Onana and have identified the Madrid goalkeeper as a potential coup.
With game time not guaranteed in Spain, he would welcome the move with the promise of such at the home of the English giants.
Lunin cemented his status as a backup to Courtois with a catalogue of impressive displays while on loan.
Following the Belgian’s cruciate injury, the Ukraine star proved instrumental in their La Liga title-winning campaign.
Furthermore, his European displays received widespread applause.
A memorable second-leg showing against Manchester City in the Champions League quarter-final was the pick of the bunch.
With his contract expiring in June 2025, Madrid are keen to extend.
But, a lack of guaranteed game time appears to be a stumbling block that the 20-time English champions are considering exploiting.
