Amid calls for widespread change as disenchantment grows among the Manchester United fanbase, it’s fair to say that Ineos is under intense pressure.
Whether you’re based in Manchester, Dublin or Sydney, the majority of Reds want nothing more than a debt-free club with a fighting chance on the football field.
However, decades of financial mismanagement under the Glazer family’s idle ownership have left an indelible scar—one Jim Ratcliffe has done little to heal.
But if we take the promise of a sustained charge on the Premier League title through the highly publicised Project 150 at face value, the hierarchy believes it will happen next season.
When assessing the current state of play, Michael Carrick’s team has drawn plenty of media attention for everything from a lowly 12th-place standing to a bland, almost pedestrian style of play.
It’s a stark contrast to the side that led the league from January onwards last season with a 71 per cent win ratio from 17 fixtures.
But as with everything, time can heal wounds if addressed correctly, and a three-week break for international fixtures has allowed first-team staff to take stock after an underwhelming start.
It’s imperative to remember that league football is a marathon, not a sprint, and four points would return United to the Champions League places.
Not to mention how differently things would look if Stockley Park had not incorrectly interjected during the Manchester Derby.
Still, with eight goals scored and as many conceded, ample questions are surfacing regarding the calibre of players available to Carrick, and what the prospect of two more transfer windows can actually achieve.
Not only has Ratcliffe retained his naysayers, but his ‘best-in-class’ sporting heads, Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox, have also collected their share of begrudgers for refusing to deviate from a pre-determined transfer strategy.
This approach has drawn widespread criticism for neglect of defensive recruitment amid a tunnel-eyed march towards attack and midfield signings.
Nonetheless, while protests and statements of no confidence in ownership are more than welcome, and we support every one of them, we’re advised that this sporting department continues to work behind the scenes.
It’s fair to say that Berrada stuck his neck out when publicly mentioning a timeline for Premier League success. And while I am in no way pardoning him for anything, I have been willing to listen.
With a brace of opportunities forthcoming in January and next summer for a final push towards domestic honours, our sources have confirmed a specific roadmap to those targets.
We’re advised that the club is targeting a trio of new faces in defence, with a new option on each full-back side, and a further central addition to complement long-term prospects Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven.
Despite Lewis Hall’s decision to sign a new long-term deal at Newcastle, United still retain their desire to lure the 22-year-old to Old Trafford.
Although finances will dictate specific targets, and a world-record fee for a full-back has previously been touted, one source has maintained internal confidence in a deal.
Tyrick Mitchell is another name of significant interest in Manchester and has been identified as a viable alternative should a package for Hall fail to materialise.
The 27-year-old’s deal expires in the summer, and while Crystal Palace possess the option to extend for an additional 12 months, we’re told he would welcome the move north.
United officials are also keen to strengthen on the right side of defence and have earmarked several potential names domestically and on the continent.
As we exclusively revealed on Wednesday, Brazilian star Wesley has gained many admirers at Carrington, particularly in Michael Sansoni’s department.
At 23, the Roma man has been described as a classic wing-back who embodies much of the flamboyant ethos and cavalier mentality of many of the great United full-backs of old.
Centrally, Wilcox and co. are eager to add a distinguished option who can hit the ground running, and have compiled dossiers on several domestic names like Jarrad Branthwaite and Murillo.
The pair are viewed as ‘tried-and-tested’ in England, and, with 188 Premier League appearances between them, would offer experience alongside Heaven and Yoro.
A decision on the latter will come once the futures of Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez are clear, with their contracts expiring in summer 2027.
