A guaranteed passage to the Europa League knockout phase was the prize for Manchester United, with victory against FCSB in Bucharest ensuring Ruben Amorim’s positive European touch continues.
Goals from Diogo Dalot and Kobbie Mainoo secured a comfortable 2-0 win and maintained their unbeaten record in continental competition throughout the new-look format.
Notably, it’s three wins from as many games following a disappointing Premier League defeat against Brighton, with optimism continuing to build throughout the supporter base.
Despite a troublesome domestic campaign, United will head into the last 16 as strong contenders to lift the trophy, with eyes on potentially grasping Champions League football in 2025-26.
A professional European performance seals three points for Manchester United
Amorim made five changes to the starting XI that earned three points against Fulham, with Altay Bayindir returning in goal and the prized academy boasting a start for Mainoo and Toby Collyer.
Rasmus Hojlund has been the focus of much attention, having not found the net since his brace against Viktoria Plzen in December. But the Portuguese tactician opted to retain the Dane at the head of his attack following a series of promising performances in training leading into the fixture.
Expectedly, a partisan Arena Nationala was in deafening voice from the off, and their players responded with a frantic tempo to proceedings. But United settled well and began retaining possession to dictate a mannered tempo.
An uneventful ten minutes was halted by a late challenge from the returning Tyrell Malacia, resulting in a yellow card and a set-piece opportunity from 30 yards.
The home side came within inches of opening the scoring from the resulting delivery. However, replays indicated that VAR may have broken Romanian hearts if the ball had found the net. Inevitably, that passage resulted in both sides responding, as United upped a gear and began threatening with a sense of swagger.
So much of Hojlund’s success throughout a dominant end to his debut campaign surfaced through his line-breaking runs. The 21-year-old enjoyed a promising opening quarter and constantly threatened the home defence with penetrating breaks into the area.
His work carved the game’s first clear-cut opportunity following one of many marauding sprints, with his squared ball finding Mainoo bursting into the area, only for his attempt to sail high over the bar.
With 25 minutes played, the 20-time English champions held 73% of the ball and mustered five efforts on goal, testing the impressive Stefan Tarnovanu twice.
United were enjoying bundles of success in the inside-left channel, and the experience within the starting XI was evident with the lion’s share of play occurring in the FCSB half.
However, a lack of cutting-edge has been a recurring theme throughout a disenchanting season, and even though the hosts were happy to sit deep and maintain a stalemate, the Premier League side once more struggled to find a breakthrough during the opening 45.
Truthfully, FCSB grew into the game throughout the final minutes of the half, feeding from a sense of vulnerability in the United box during the rare occasions of pressure that Dalot and Co had to endure.
If the opening 40 belonged to Manchester United, the final five offered plenty of food for thought for Amorim at the break.
Alejandro Garnacho and Amad came in for the restart, replacing Malacia and Collyer to maximise their dominant possession and convert territory into goals. The Argentine came within inches of breaking the deadlock within 60 seconds, bursting onto a loose ball from Joyskim Dawa to beat Tarnovanu with a delicate lob before agonisingly striking the post.
Intensity was growing for the visitors, with multiple passages of threatening play through each phase. Bruno struck the woodwork for a second time on the hour mark with a scintillating effort from distance.
The consequent throw-in resulted in another opportunity for Amorim’s men, with Mainoo breaking the line on the wing before squaring an excellent ball across the face of the goal for an on-rushing Dalot to power home for the opener.
Based on play, it was no more than United deserved.
However, as we know all too well, football is a game that can change instantly, and the Reds received a stirring warning within two minutes when Daniel Birligea struck the crossbar from 30 yards with a rasping effort from a quickfire counter.
Undeterred, this United side is starting to show signs of green shoots under their Portuguese tactician, and they doubled their lead after 68 minutes through the brilliant Mainoo.
Garnacho offered ample threat on the left wing following his introduction. His cutback was guided home by the impressive Stockport man who was enjoying his evening in an advanced role.
Casemiro and Leny Yoro entered with 20 to play, allowing Lisandro Martinez and Christian Eriksen an additional rest ahead of Sunday’s Premier League test against Crystal Palace.
Despite well-documented troubles throughout the football club, Manchester United retains a significant global supporter base. An eager fan emphasised this when he took to the field after 75 minutes for a selfie opportunity with his beloved Argentinian.
Joshua Zirkzee replaced Hojlund for the final ten minutes, with the Dane delivering a notable performance as the sole striker. He would have hoped to find the net during a showing that deserved a return.
Garnacho has been the focus of a potential departure during the January window, and his performance would have gone a long way towards maintaining hope of his Manchester stay.
He linked up splendidly with Bruno in the final minute of regulation, only for his captain to dink his effort marginally wide.
During a night when the travelling support once more highlighted their status as the game’s finest, their side solidified their status as one of the favourites to lift this trophy.
Eight games, five wins, three draws and 16 goals scored represent a firm claim regardless of opposition, and Ruben Amorim will relish the prospect of a memorable European journey.
The draw for the last 16 takes place from 13:00 CET on Friday, 31 January.
