Brazilian midfielder Casemiro has enjoyed a glittering career that returned a multitude of honours.
His talents and ability on the ball delighted Manchester United supporters throughout his debut campaign – with an array of glittering displays that mesmerized those in attendance.
But, following a troublesome 2023-24 that returned an amalgamation of injuries and lacklustre performances, speculation has mounted about the player’s impending departure.
Like veteran defender Raphael Varane, any exit will leave a significant hole in the squad – an issue that requires addressing in the summer window.
With such, the conveyor of potential replacements has begun to circulate, with another former Ajax star reportedly attracting interest from the Old Trafford giants.
Introducing Edson Alvarez
At 26, Edson Alvarez presents a Premier League-proven option with a cutting edge to enhance his game.
The Mexican international has clocked up 78 appearances for El Tri and has enjoyed a decorated club career that has seen him play a crucial role at Club América, Ajax and West Ham.
Notably – like many players that have caught the eye of Erik ten Hag – Alvarez lined out for the Dutchman for three seasons at de Godenzonen.
He is a workhorse and facilitates the destroyer role admirably – with European-leading metrics across fundamentally important holding-player requirements.
A deal may prove difficult considering The Hammer’s desire to build a solid spine under Julen Lopetegui. Furthermore, David Moyes forked out £35 Million for the midfielder less than 12 months ago.
What would Alvarez offer Ten Hag?
Alvarez made 42 appearances across all competitions for Moyes’s side, displaying a notable engine and tenacious approach.
When factoring his defensive role solely, he ranked in the top two percentile across the European leagues for clearances (2.79) and blocks (2.16) per 90 minutes played.
Additionally, he was knocking on the door of the top ten percentile in tackles made per 90′ (2.91) and interceptions (1.5).
While aerial duels would not be his greatest attribute, he won 1.16 per 90′ – ranking close to the top 70 percentile in European football.
A notable asset he possesses is his press resistance and reliability in collecting the ball in deep areas – a key trait for a Ten Hag side. He averaged 5.23 touches in his penalty area with 20.94 in his defensive third.
Should United proceed with a deal for the talented midfielder, a sense of defensive security would be secured, allowing Kobbie Mainoo freedom to roam further up the field.
Fabrizio Romano claims the 20-time champions consider the player one of several potential options should Casemiro depart.
