A hard-earned point from a promising comeback against Everton cemented Manchester United and Ruben Amorim in 15th position in the Premier League table, 13 points clear of relegation with a goal difference of minus seven.
With 12 fixtures remaining and a sense of undeniable disenchantment in and around the football club, pockets of disgruntled supporters have seen enough of their Portuguese chief and his flawed ideals for a back-three philosophy.
However, many of the Old Trafford faithful remain committed to the former Sporting supremo, and the Theatre of Red can exclusively confirm that the United hierarchy shares this sentiment.
Ranking officials have stated that while conversations have intensified regarding a sense of alarm with the first team’s domestic position and prolonged struggles in adapting to a new system, these were key indicators that Amorim had raised before commencing his role.
It is common knowledge that the 40-year-old had highlighted his desire to commence in the summer. Despite public perceptions, an understanding of an inevitably difficult transition period was agreed upon before his mid-season arrival.
We’re advised that while officials were not keen to see a campaign “written off”, there was an acceptance of an impending downturn in form and morale. However, as a collective, the entire backroom team is confident of a swift turnaround when adhering to this agreed philosophy.
Ruben Amorim and Manchester United | “Tomorrow doesn’t come if you don’t take care of today”
For many, there is a belief surrounding a flawed ideal with expectations of an immediate upturn in form.
Without attempting to sound patronizing, it’s almost as though individuals expected a magic wand to be waved upon his arrival. As highlighted on the most recent episode of the Theatre of Red Podcast (TORP), this is the same group of footballers that returned eight goals in nine league outings under Erik ten Hag.
Admittedly, performances have been about as far from acceptable as anyone can tolerate. More often than not, there is a sense of bewilderment regarding individual decision-making and an inability to function as a coherent unit.
Additionally, many question a refusal to deviate from a system that does not complement square pegs in round holes. This leads to speculation and assumptions regarding a perceived stubbornness to change and Amorim’s long-term suitability in the North West.
“It’s a little bit like Russell Martin,” Jamie Jackson stated on TORP. “He went down on his sword saying: ‘I’m going to play out from the back’ – you got sacked, sir.
“Tomorrow doesn’t come if you don’t take care of today. Amorim’s ethos is: ‘Look, it’s going to hurt now. It’s going to be worse in the long run if we don’t do this now’ – this 343 thing. But, in the long run, we will reap the benefits.’
“You might do, Ruben, if you’re still around.”
This Manchester United side has struggled to find the net and categorically impose themselves in the final third. Eight points from a possible 21 since the turn of the year have generated the almost impossible conversation of a relegation battle.
“If this gets to within, say six points of the drop zone, fans themselves are going to say: ‘Is this guy the real deal,” Jamie continued. “Whether that’s fair or not, it’s just the climate.”
Inevitably, any future success of this team under Amorim will come down to acquiring suitable players for his system.
While the financial issues at Manchester United are another story entirely, the incompetence of idle owners has largely contributed to a lack of January activity.
That said, the arrival of Ayden Heaven and Patrick Dorgu has offered a glimpse into the potential makeup of the Portuguese tactician’s desired group, with the latter already impressive with his athleticism and capabilities to adapt to the English game.
However, we are advised by ranking officials that future business depends on outgoings and that it is necessary to focus on compliance with Profit and Sustainability Rules.
There is a shared viewpoint from the hierarchy and management to offload high-earning squad members and infuse first-team options with several promising youngsters from the academy.
Additionally, names like Angel Gomes are considered a realistic possibility, given his age, ability, contractual status and willingness to negotiate a reasonable salary.
