Following a January transfer window that saw Marcus Rashford and Antony leave Manchester United in temporary deals, supporters are concerned about Ruben Amorim’s conundrum regarding a lack of attacking options.
Both players provided depth to the forward department at Old Trafford, and whilst both exited, no one arrived to replace them. Inevitably, this caused a stir among the fanbase, with some wishing the pair well.
The other side of the argument is waged by those who are angered by Rashford’s attitude and motivation to wear the red shirt at this stage of his career.
Either way, United entered February with two fewer options in the final third and plenty of questions surrounding the new-look hierarchy in the North West.
Learning from bad habits
In the past, Manchester United have become renowned for ‘panic buys’ as the winter window closed. During the 2020 January installation, the club signed Odion Ighalo on deadline day as a temporary replacement for the injured Rashford.
These incoming moves represent a lack of organisation within the North West outfit, ultimately generating anger.
However, while the club failed to add any names to the squad, allowing two forwards to go in a team that struggles to score does not appear to be an advisable plan.
Sections of the fanbase believe that Amorim had anticipated an arrival in the striking department. These feelings are enhanced due to the form of both Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee as they struggle to find the net.
The positives of this strange scenario
The failure to acquire the signature of a forward may have signified change.
Opinions are split, albeit there are positives to onboard when reviewing the transfer activity of the 20-time champions.
This football club is well-versed in rash decisions to ease the pressure on the second half of the season. However, impulsive judgments later on lead to higher fees instead of reasonable figures.
An example of this during the current window is 19-year-old Mathys Tel.
Initially, the winger told Daniel Levy and Tottenham Hotspur that he was not interested in any deal. Fast-forward to the dying hours, Spurs shelled out €10 million for his temporary move and committed to €2m in wage payments.
Increased pressure on the hierarchy
Manchester United, and everything associated with the football club, is heavily scrutinised by supporters and the media.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS team are not afraid of making enemies at Old Trafford, and various determinations have caused uproar amongst supporters.
The decision that sparked significant outrage was removing concession prices for Premier League fixtures at the Theatre of Dreams, with all tickets set at £66 regardless of age or location.
This has led to face-to-face talks between Ratcliffe and the Fans Advisory Board to hear supporter’s concerns, with a sense of fear and anger gripping many.
Therefore, as speculation looms over where the club’s future home will be, recruitment will be essential.
Positive results in transfer windows will not satisfy supporters who are priced out of seeing their club. However, getting recruitment right will remove some strain from Ratcliffe’s shoulders.
Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven’s arrival are sure to whet the appetite. However, there can be no complacency in the improvements required to take the club to the next level.
It is evident that Amorim needs additional names to bolster his philosophy, and the precarious financial situation at the club makes each decision crucial.
Summer is targetted as the optimum time to pounce, with names like Geovany Quenda heavily touted as future arrivals. Furthermore, acquiring an elite centre forward is a mandatory requirement, and the club have already made moves towards solidifying their desired man.
While frustration is the general feeling amongst the Old Trafford faithful, there is confidence within the hierarchy of achieving some of their vision during the upcoming window.
For Amorim’s sake, we can only hope they make the correct choices.
