Manchester United academy product Scott McTominay has waved goodbye to the North West, taking his talents to Italian side Napoli in a €30 million package which includes a 10% sell-on clause.
The midfielder joined United in 2002 as a bright-eyed five-year-old with an infectious desire to succeed at the home of the 20-time English champions.
However, following a prolonged pursuit from Giovanni Manna and Antonio Conte, the Old Trafford outfit opted to cash in on the 27-year-old.
The 2022-23 Serie A champions have tracked the Scottish international during the summer window and pounced following several failed bids from Premier League side Fulham.
Given the injection of pure profit, United are now expected to finalise their pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte.
A memorable Manchester career
Having signed his first professional deal in July 2013, McTominay spent several years attempting to cultivate his status within the academy ranks.
An amalgamation of injuries and physicality issues led to several bouts of frustration, with the player utilised in multiple roles, from defender to striker.
However, his determination to succeed regularly shone, and he would go on to make his senior debut on May 7, 2017, under Jose Mourinho.
Bit by bit, his performances led to recurring appearances, ultimately becoming a regular feature from the 2019-20 season onwards.
With 178 Premier League appearances under his belt, the dynamic midfield player is recognised as a versatile asset at club and international levels.
Fresh off a memorable individual campaign, the Lancaster lad supplied ten goals and three assists in 43 appearances for Erik ten Hag, with ample suggestion the Dutchman was keen to retain his services.
However, his desire for a regular starting birth can not be maintained in Manchester, with the player advised of his squad status as a rotation option with room for regular cameos from the bench.
Furthermore, with the demands of Profit and Sustainability looming large and Sir Jim Ratcliffe eager to complete a deal for Ugarte, Dan Ashworth and Ten Hag have chosen to authorise the sale.
McTominay departs the Premier League with winners’ medals in the EFL Cup and FA Cup, alongside a place in the UEFA Europa League Squad of the Season en route to his side’s final defeat against Villarreal in 2021.
His time in Manchester will be remembered fondly, with memorable moments such as his winning effort against Manchester City in the final game before the COVID-19 lockdown.
Everybody at the Theatre of Red wishes Scott the best in Italy and thanks him for his commitment and dedication to Manchester United.
