Unless you’ve been under a rock, you’ll understand the historic relationship between Manchester United and the promotion of talented youngsters to the senior ranks.
It has been a foundation in the North West since Tom Manley and Jack Wassall appeared against Fulham on Saturday, 30 October 1937.
Since that famous day, United have continued to include at least one youth player in every matchday squad – an unrivalled legacy celebrated amongst the Old Trafford faithful.
From the legendary Busby Babes to Fergie’s Fledglings, the 20-time English Champions have crafted unrivalled success alongside an ethos of trust.
“If they are good enough, they are old enough,” Sir Matt famously said, and that is witnessed today through the likes of Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho.
From their FA Youth Cup win to iconic goals against Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley, few would doubt the capabilities of the pair.
However, a scourge hit the throat of Manchester United in June 2005, and its sickening effects have targeted the heart of this legendary relationship almost 20 years later.
A lack of due diligence has jeopardised everything from academy to league standing
The Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) supply an unmistakable worry for the Old Trafford hierarchy.
In no universe should this be the case: we are speaking about the greatest sporting establishment in the world.
But, everything from dividends to the neglect of infrastructure and incompetence at the highest level of the boardroom applied individual lacerations, allowing mainstream media to tease the possibility of the sale of Mainoo and Garnacho.
Now, I have been reliably informed that barring travesty, Kobbie is going nowhere. He is happy at his boyhood club and keen to commit his long-term future to the badge.
Ineos and the Glazers are also “happy to seal a fruitful future” with the midfielder. However, worryingly, a conversation about his sale did indeed occur.
We are led to believe that Sir Jim Ratcliffe – a local lad – wants nothing more than to return his boyhood club to the head of the domestic table. That, despite multiple financial decisions leaving the sourest of tastes in mouths, he is committed to bettering the first-team squad.
Naturally, the billionaire has money to spend. However, the Glazer family mismanagement has left the financial line at such a critically dangerous level that the prospect of a PSR-infused points deduction is a real threat.
With all respect to rival supporters – even those who would relish further harm to the club – every one of them would bite your hand off to acquire the services of Mainoo.
Say what you will about opinion, but he is far beyond talent. The boy is something more and represents a glimmer of hope for a wounded Manchester United supporter base.
That in itself should deem the conversation of sale null and void.
Remember, through everything that may occur, fans are the fundamental factor for any owner, and legacy matters to loyal Reds.
Without being dramatic, I can’t fathom the scenes in the North West should they sell the 19-year-old. Liverpool would merely act as a canape.
Garnacho is another name reportedly being considered for sale. The Argentine may have fallen on some troublesome times of late due to a perceived attitude issue, but his talent and potential are evident.
When the Stretford End rewords Ronaldo’s song to embrace a player, that means something.
When all is said and done, I am not naive. The most uninterested individual understands the Glazer family do not care about sentiment in Manchester.
Additionally, hyperbole and sensationalism are inevitably rampant when a transfer window begins.
But there is no smoke without fire. Therein lies the fundamental stumbling block for Reds across the globe.
From staff redundancies to bonus slashing and ticket price hikes, a show of care and consideration is long overdue.
Whether or not Manchester United supporters will ever receive this is another story.
