Fresh off the back of a well-earned goal in Scotland’s under-19s’ 2-2 draw against Latvia, Manchester United starlet Tyler Fletcher continues to develop his status as one of the academy’s brightest prospects.
Following in his father’s footsteps, the 18-year-old has earned rave reviews for club and country, seamlessly transitioning between diverse midfield roles.
Although attacking names like James Scanlon and Shea Lacey have stolen the underage headlines, Tyer’s outstanding performances for the United under-21s have been consistently effortless.
In fact, such has been his growth alongside twin brother Jack that many within Carrington feel a natural athleticism and notable physique can enable him to make the critical step to senior status.
But who is this unassuming talent that continues to coast towards first-team football with less than a hint of media attention to support his credible output?
Tyler Fletcher – a humble rise through the Manchester United ranks
Son of the legendary Darren and brother of fellow academy star Jack, Tyler began his career a short distance over the road at Manchester City.
Like his father, Fletcher is at home in the number six role and has earned a notable reputation, having progressed through England’s underage development before opting to represent his beloved Scotland at under-16 level.
Despite the best efforts of those in blue, the brothers committed to the 20-time English champions in the summer of 2024, sold on the ideals of a coaching department that saw undeniable first-team qualities.
Since then, the midfielder has made 50 appearances for United, across under-18 and under-21 sides, starring in the International Cup, UEFA Youth League and Premier League 2.
“He affects the game with the ball, the game without the ball and the game in the top third of the pitch,” Travis Binnion stated in April.
“He’s looking strong, fit, and there’s loads more to come from him, he’s not done by a long stretch.
“So yeah, underrated? Maybe because he hasn’t been with the first team, and maybe because there are players who are a bit more eye-catching in the forward positions who maybe have numbers to support.
“But he’s not underrated by the staff, the club and the players. He’s excellent and, like his brother [Jack], he’s got loads more to come, loads more physically to come.”

Presently, the under-21 side sits second in Premier League 2 with seven wins and a solitary loss from eight outings.
Tyler has been a mainstay at the heart of that impressive outfit, averaging 81 minutes and featuring in every fixture, including the standout 2-0 victory against Notts County in the EFL Trophy.
Although Jack made the bench for Ruben Amorim in the senior side’s trip to Spurs, both brothers have caught the attention of the former Sporting chief with their commitment to individual progression.
Sources close to the Theatre of Red have confirmed that ‘Ruben feels both possess the natural attributes, dedication, and mental fortitude to separate themselves from many other youngsters.’
Unquestionably, this is a player who does the simple things first, focusing on his sound football development rather than attempting the extravagant.
Regularly described as a midfield lynchpin, academy staff believe they have an assured teenager with an old head on young shoulders, yielding a distinct positional awareness that could easily complement Amorim’s double pivot for years to come.
For now, it is a case of when we will see Tyler emerge into the senior setup with his sibling, continuing the proud Fletcher traditions at the home of England’s most cherished academy.
