Having penned his first professional deal in July, Ethan Williams is one of the most promising Manchester United prospects to have caught the eye of Erik ten Hag.
At 18, the exciting attacker has been on the periphery of senior action, advancing his development noticeably across various age ranks.
Although primarily a left winger, his versatility is commendable, possessing the ability to affect the game anywhere across the front line.
His output during the 2023-24 campaign has left many purring in anticipation of a senior opportunity, with the player attracting the gaze of several Bundelisga outfits.
But who is this unassuming teenager that has captivated the imaginations of many of the elite eyes in the North West, and what can he offer the 20-time English champions?
From Rochdale Academy to Treble-winning star
Born in 2005, Williams began his football journey at Rochdale, where he gained a reputation as a dedicated youngster with a will for progression.
Nationwide interest inevitably followed a barrage of recognisable displays – with United sealing his services in 2019 to join the Under-14 ranks.
Carrington became a beacon of inspiration for the teenager and a platform to showcase his desire to join the senior ranks.
Following careful planning and a meticulous approach with the required work ethic, the Mancunian attacker eventually laid waste to the Under-18 competition – while also impressing with the Under-21s.
He played a starring role in Adam Lawrence’s treble-winning Under-18 side last season, scoring the winning goal in a 2-1 national final victory against southern title winners Chelsea.
The attacker’s impact across both age categories was remarkable, contributing 17 goals and nine assists in 35 appearances.
Notably, his 26 contributions were only bettered by the Jimmy Murphy Award winner Ethan Wheatley (28) across that memorable 23-24 campaign.
Attempting to follow in the footsteps of giants
Given Ten Hag’s history of entrusting youth, it will come as no surprise that Williams has received ample time amongst the first team.
He partook in senior training aged 16 in preparation for a Carabao Cup tie with Aston Villa in November 2022 before regular sessions throughout last season.
A fitting reward for a significant campaign saw inclusion in the Dutch tactician’s pre-season squad in Rosenborg – a fixture where he played 45 minutes.
More recently, he was involved in the Under-21 side’s EFL Trophy outing against Barnsley – a memorable 3-2 comeback victory.
As is the case with each promising youngster, success is never guaranteed. The ethos at Manchester United is to develop individuals to succeed in life first.
However, one need only look at the opportunities presented to Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho to view the rewards of hard work and a commitment to success.
In Williams, the Old Trafford hierarchy has identified a unique talent with the potential to grow into a first-team asset – rewarding him with his professional deal.
From here, the onus lies at the feet of this brilliant teen to realise his abilities at the Theatre of Dreams.
