Following the departures of Marcus Rashford and Antony, Tyrell Malacia has returned to the Eredivisie on a season-long loan with former rivals PSV Eindhoven.
Peter Bosz’s side will cover 100% of the salary within a package including a buy option for €10 million. United will retain a significant sell-on clause above 25%.
The 25-year-old has struggled to rediscover the sparkling form that earned him a move to Manchester since recovering from the knee injury that kept him out of action for over 15 months.
His eight appearances have not convinced Ruben Amorim of his suitability for this new-look United side, and the prospect of regular football is advantageous for all.
Furthermore, the arrival of Patrick Dorgu signals a new chapter for the left-wing back position at M16, as the Portuguese ideals of the former Sporting chief continue to spark conversation in the North West.
There may be a route back to Manchester for Malacia
Malacia signed a four-year deal with Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United in July 2022 for a minuscule fee of €15 million.
The then 22-year-old had grown a considerable reputation at Feyenoord, making 137 senior appearances en route to claiming the KNVB Cup and the Johan Cruyff Shield in 2018.
He suffered an agonising Europa Conference League final defeat to Roma in 2021-22, with his performances earning recognition in the team of the tournament, as multiple continental heavyweights conducted intensive scouting strategies for the Dutch talent.
Having made 39 appearances in his debut campaign under Ten Hag, the defender ended the season with silverware as his side lifted the League Cup.
However, a recurring issue with his knee required summer attention, with the resulting rehabilitation keeping him out of action for close to a year and a half.
Although his departure presents the possibility of a permanent move, his ability is well-regarded at Carrington, and senior officials are keen to see if he can regain the form and confidence that initially caught their attention.
It is an unfortunate scenario for a player once regarded as the future of the left side of a Red defence. But who knows, maybe we will see him again soon.
Everyone at the Theatre of Red wishes Tyrell the best for the remainder of the season.
How do you feel about the possibility of Malacia returning to Manchester? Can another sparkling run change minds, or is the Premier League a step too far?
