Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Belgium captain Youri Tielemans for £35 million, subject to registration.
Tielemans has committed himself to a long-term project at Old Trafford, with a contract that runs until June 2031.
The former Aston Villa star played a crucial role in their Europa League Final success, scoring the opening goal in a 3-0 win against Bundesliga outfit SC Freiburg.
He brings elite Premier League pedigree and Champions League experience, along with 90 senior appearances for the Belgian national team.
Michael Carrick has inherited a genuine playmaker, who led the division in defensive line breaks per 100 passes last season and ranked second in line-breaking passes under pressure.
Although some will argue that United should have acquired the former Leicester favourite seven years ago, when he first left Monaco, few will dispute his present ability as a man who has recently turned 29.
There’s a lot to be said about configuring a harmonious squad with a fine blend of youth and maturity, particularly in midfield.
And with several young stars already positioned in the engine room, mentorship will play a significant role in the progression of several careers, such as Kobbie Mainoo and Andrey Santos.
Alongside Bruno Fernandes, Tielemans will assume a senior position in Carrick’s dressing room, and the honour of that title is not lost on him.
“It’s hard to describe just how proud I am to join Manchester United,” Youri stated on Tuesday. “Signing for such a special club feels incredible; it is the culmination of years of dedication since I first fell in love with football.
“I have had the privilege of experiencing success in the game, and it has only increased my determination to achieve more.

Having abandoned their pursuits of both Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, Jason Wilcox and co have come under intense scrutiny for a lack of summer impetus.
Nonetheless, this new-look sporting department has remained calm throughout, leaning on the confidence gained from months of scouting and data-led innovations.
United’s director of football appeared particularly pleased when unveiling the club’s third arrival of the window.
“Youri has consistently been one of the most outstanding midfielders in the Premier League throughout the past seven years,” Wilcox stated.
“He has all of the technical qualities, as well as the ambition and mentality, to thrive at Manchester United. Youri’s consistency is exceptional, and he will add further composure, creativity and leadership to our squad.
“We are delighted to welcome a player of his influence and experience, both on the pitch and within the dressing room, as we continue to build a team ready to challenge for the biggest honours.”
